It’s the first day of #COP29 in Baku. The negotiations over the next 2 weeks are critical. Here are a few of the areas we’ll be watching closely - ⭐ There will be a heavy focus on international climate finance – discussions around both the expected figures needed as well as sources of potential financing globally. ⭐ National climate plans will also be an important focus. Countries that signed the Paris Agreement are required to submit a new round of NDCs (national determined contributions) early next year. ⭐ From a geopolitical perspective, all eyes will be on the US and the implications of the election + what this means for its evolving role as a global climate leader. ⭐ From a UK standpoint, it’ll also be interesting to look out for news coverage around Keir Starmer’s appearance. The government were elected on a mandate for stronger climate ambitions, but this is likely to be put to the test over the next few weeks. Following the news cycle can feel like an almost impossible challenge to keep up with evolving negotiations and announcements. Over the next few days, I’ll aim to share our favourite + most helpful media roundups. Today, I’ve found The Guardian Live Feed useful and I’d like to give a shout out to edie and their COP29 jargon buster. From making sense of the blue zone, the green zone and who on earth High-Level Climate Champions are, they’ve got it covered:

Looking ahead to Climate #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, it's clear the global landscape is shifting. Major economies are facing political changes, adding uncertainty to climate ambitions. Yet, this is a global event – over 190 countries participate, with thousands more subnational, state, local, and tribal governments all making moves on climate action. As our Global Managing Director of Climate Clare Shakya states, “People – not politics – must be top of mind during Baku's crucial climate finance negotiations." Amid changing dynamics around the world, TNC will be there pushing for three main priorities: ☀️ Accelerating the urgent phase out of fossil fuels and the transition to renewable energy. 💚 Building climate-resilient societies that are future-proofed against the increasingly unstable century ahead. 💸 Investing financial flows into climate-positive outcomes. Yesterday the #BonnClimateConference ended on terms that reflect well on this year's progress in the international spheres of #climateaction.🌏 It sets an interesting path to #COP29, which includes an anticipated focus on the Nationally Determined Contributions (#NDCs), an enhanced planning of financial support through the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance, and forward-looking planning on adaptation practices. Other positive aspects of the conference are that countries are required to prepare materials before #COP29 starts and stronger cooperation is gradually more emphasized, both of which make the discussions at the conference in November much more efficient.🌱 Check out more detailed information on the Bonn updates at https://lnkd.in/d6YQAAwx

*At COP29* , three primary issues dominated discussions: *climate finance, the future of fossil fuels, and carbon markets.* Climate finance emerged as a contentious topic, particularly regarding how much *wealthier nations should support poorer countries* in addressing climate change and transitioning to clean energy. A notable proposal suggested *committing $300 billion* annually by 2035 to aid developing nations; however, skepticism arose, especially from India, which viewed this as an insincere political gesture rather than a true commitment to climate justice. The debates at COP29 underscored the complexities of global climate negotiations, emphasizing the need for *genuine collaboration and equitable climate action.* The urgency for decisive action is critical, as the *responsibility to advocate for a sustainable future falls on us all.* https://lnkd.in/gJHRNDJi

I know you've read too many #COP29 takes. But please read one last one as I think we know a little bit about this process & are deeply engaged 😀 (w/ Joe Thwaites. https://lnkd.in/ee336Wfy. COP29 was a contentious meeting that left a bitter taste in the mouths of the most vulnerable countries and many others. Rebuilding trust will require all countries to rally more forcibly around the “spirit of the Paris Agreement,” recapturing the common imperatives that brought the world together around a shared climate goal. Despite these dynamics, COP29 delivered three key things: (1) a new climate finance target; (2) beginning the sprint to new climate targets for 2035; (3) additional action to deliver on past promises. Coming out of this difficult meeting, it will be critical that countries continue to rally international support for climate action. 1️⃣ a New Climate Finance Goal was launched: https://lnkd.in/eKvqScek 2️⃣ began the sprint to Gold Standard National Climate Targets for 2035: https://lnkd.in/ehFt2aTa 3️⃣ advanced some Additional Action to Close the Ambition Gap this Decisive Decade ➡️ Going forward, the world will need to Continue Rallying International Climate Action

With COP29 due to commence on Monday in Baku, Azerbaijan, Carbon Brief have collated a really interesting article looking at the key focus for each nation going in to the event. With a packed agenda that will consider climate adaptation, carbon markets and scaling up emissions reductions, amongst other issues, the annual global climate summit is focused on driving global collaboration to fight climate change. Attended by all 198 parties, the convention has to cover a lot of ground in a short space of time and understandably, the nations involved are facing a broad range of climate related issues and priorities, that they hope will be addressed. The priorities this year range from finance issues (NCQG in particular!) and the launch of Article 6, through to the Paris Agreement deadline and the ‘global stocktake’. As with any COP, there’s going to be a lot of compromise involved but it will be interesting to see what the outcome is next week! https://lnkd.in/eXsS73ZU #COP29 #ClimateChange #NetZero #NCQG #ParisAgreement

We’re pleased to see progress at COP29 with the finalisation of the rules for international carbon markets under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement. 🌍 Navigating the Future of Global Climate Efforts Amidst Political Shifts As the world prepares for COP29 in Baku, 11-22 Nov 2024, the election of Donald Trump has stirred discussions around the future of global climate action. Despite concerns, leaders of the Paris Agreement remain optimistic about the ongoing momentum towards #decarbonisation. Key insights: 🔹 Trump’s potential withdrawal from the Paris Agreement raises questions about US involvement in global climate finance. 🔹 Major global leaders and financial executives are choosing not to attend COP29, citing geopolitical concerns. 🔹 The strategic focus of the summit remains firm: achieving new climate finance goals is crucial to supporting green transitions in developing countries. 🔹 There’s a resilient economic momentum driving the clean energy transition, which experts believe will continue despite political hurdles. 🌱 The global shift towards sustainable solutions continues to present opportunities for innovation and collaboration. As Christiana Figueres states, clean energy technologies not only outperform fossil fuels but also address their volatility and inefficiency. 📊 The challenge now is to maintain this momentum and ensure that strategic actions are taken to safeguard the planet and future generations. #ClimateAction #Sustainability #COP29 #EnergyTransition #ParisAgreement #UN #Azerbaijan

The conclusion of #COP29 in Azerbaijan reflects a troubling disparity in global climate action. A $300 billion climate finance pledge—less than half of what developing nations sought—underscores the inequity in addressing a crisis disproportionately impacting the Global South and an "Optical Illusion". India's strong stance reminds us that trust and collaboration are critical to tackling this shared challenge. The adoption of the New Collective Quantified Goal and progress on carbon markets offer hope, but the urgency of action cannot be overstated. It’s time for real commitments, not just numbers on paper. https://lnkd.in/gbEXCkgU #COP29 #ClimateAction #ClimateCrisis #ClimateFinance #GlobalSouth #IndiaForClimate #EquityInClimateAction #SustainableFuture #NetZero #CarbonMarkets #ActOnClimate #ClimateJustice #PayUp #SustainabilityMatters #OpticalIllusion
