May is Healthy Vision Month! 👀 It's a time to celebrate the gift of sight and remind ourselves of the crucial role vision plays in our lives. While we focus on maintaining healthy vision and scheduling regular eye exams, it's also essential to acknowledge the significance of vision research and funding for organizations like the National Eye Institute (NEI). https://bit.ly/3wpkPxZ Vision research not only helps us understand how our eyes work but also leads to groundbreaking discoveries in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of eye diseases and disorders. Funding for NEI supports this vital research, enabling scientists and clinicians to develop innovative solutions to preserve and enhance vision for people of all ages. So, as we prioritize our eye health this month, let's also advocate for continued investment in vision research and support organizations like NEI. I've booked! Having been totally inspired by the #tedxwarrington event last Thursday, I've just booked for the next one near me, at the Bridgewater Hall in March. (link to register for tickets at the bottom of this post) "Ideas worth spreading" was totally true! Here are just a few of the snippets that stood out for me: Jo Tosh, Parkinson's advocate, speaking about the "Bespoke 💩show with no cure" and reminding us that "Life is not a drill". Lester Barr, Consultant surgeon, talking about the risks contributing to breast cancer and that 40% of them are things we can influence ourselves (diet, exercise, weigh gain, processed food). Dr Amrita Sen Mukherjee speaking about invisible disabilities and that we "Need people who rejoice in celebrating 'different'". Carlos Munez speaking about the 4 chapters of his 'book' and that "Being our true self should be as easy as breathing... If you are a minority, understand you are a gift..you deserve to be truly yourself. You deserve to breathe in and out". Louise Herridge getting us on board with the fact that "Reading a bedtime story really could change the world!" Sue Evans sharing her thoughts on stress and that we need to find AWE in stresses- the actions we're Able, Willing and Empowered to take. All to help avoid our brains suffering from 'Learned Helplessness' (I also liked her analogy of spotting Minis, as my teenaged son has an obsession with spotting Yaris cars!). And then wrapping up with Karl Perry - The Katalyst Guy, with 3 key takeaways: 1. To appreciate and celebrate more of life's little wins. 2. The 💩-ometer 1-10 scale of perspective, that things are almost never as bad as our brains trick us into believing they are. 3. Considering our relationship between decision making, opportunities and how much we allow fear to hold us back. And not to forget "LEARN CPR!" **I apologise profusely to individual speakers if my 'scribbling in the dark' didn't capture their quotes exactly! Enough emphasis cannot be placed on this positive approach to interaction, as both partners struggle to communicate well and effectively in all that takes place throughout day-to-day living. Unfortunately, so much of the joy still to be lived can be lost in the frustrations that both experience, and this sadly can have such a negative impact on the relationship. The Care Partner Support Series educates us to understand so many aspects of dementia from actual changes to the brain, demonstrations how to communicate effectively with compassion, and about the impact on and necessity to care for ourselves."
