I recently had the opportunity to be a speaker at the DECULT conference, and I was truly blown away by the experience. This conference is a must-attend for anyone who wants to learn more about the harms caused by cultic groups, the science of indoctrination and coercion, and how to support survivors. Here are a few key takeaways from the conference: The Importance of Education: Education is critical in preventing people from falling prey to cultic groups and coercive control. We need to be aware of the tactics that these groups use to recruit and indoctrinate members. The Power of Support: Survivors of cultic groups need our support. There are many resources available to help them heal and rebuild their lives. The Need for Trauma-Informed Care: When working with survivors of cultic groups, it is essential to use a trauma-informed approach. This means understanding the impact of trauma on the brain and body and providing support that is sensitive to the needs of survivors. The DECULT conference was also a great example of how to run a trauma-informed and survivor-focused event. Anke Richter and the organizers created a safe and welcoming space for all attendees. They also provided a variety of resources and support services for survivors.
