Profitable positioning demands consistency. Consistent positioning, if done right, leads to profit. But what is positioning? Positioning is how you set yourself apart in the minds of your audience. It's what people think makes your company unique and memorable—like a teaching method, culture, personality, etc. Unfortunately, many companies go from unknown to known, thanks to a clear differentiator... And then, when the market, operations, or sales get tough, they change their positioning, often based on what a "best practice" says. This is a dubious decision. If you are loved for a reason, why would you (1) Take that reason away (2) Implement a change that might give people a reason not to love you? Most times, when it comes to positioning, it's best to: 1. Stay Consistent: Keep reinforcing your position year after year. 2. Capitalize on Strengths: Highlight what made you successful in the first place. 3. Understand Your Market: Know your competitors and your unique position within the education landscape. The outcomes? Big org = many team members = many opinions. Sometimes, it can be too many. Too much. 🫤 How can you avoid having constant discussions at every corner? I don’t know a better way than having a value proposition written down and agreed on by the team. Well thought-out, clearly defined and up-to-date. - Who is our audience? - What do they need? - How do we solve their problem? - Why is our solution better than the alternatives? If the team has these “simple” questions answered, it eliminates 90% of meaningless discussion and lets everyone focus on what’s really important and worth discussing. Decisions — strategic and tactical — come so much easier. Unfortunately, teams sometimes skip this essential step. Ever worse, they do it formally. It feels so basic that some people don’t think too much about it. Sometimes, they also forget to revisit their value proposition. Markets are constantly evolving, and every org needs to update it now and then to ensure they stay at the edge of growth. Do you know your company’s value proposition?
