After 2 years of layoffs in tech, one of my top pieces of advice for job seekers is that this job market is NOT the time to be looking for a stretch job/career switch unless you have the resources/situation to support a prolonged search. 🧐 Companies are almost always hesitant to train, and right now, almost all postings have several applicants/candidates that will only need standard onboarding. 😰 If you’re searching and need a job “soon”, optimize your LI profile and resume for that one role you’re most qualified for, and while you can apply to other roles with that collateral, your best bet to stand out is to be intentional. 👍 WHEN the market recovers over the next ~year, things should return to “normal” (ie. 𝘼𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙗𝙚 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 In a world where technology is always evolving, you can't guarantee that you won't fall behind. LinkedIn is a great place to learn what industry experts are currently working on, and they're sharing their knowledge for free! 𝟮. 𝘼𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙗𝙚 𝙣𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 60% of us will get fired or laid off at least once during our careers. We'll need people around us to open new doors for us. It's tough to meet people organically, especially if you're not already in those circles. When I first got started, I lowkey followed my career inspirations and commented on their posts until they noticed me. 𝟯. 𝙈𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙧𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙞𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙧𝙨, 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙞𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤 𝙟𝙤𝙗 𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨! Companies hire constantly, but won't publish any job listings until it's too late. Make the first move by applying early. LinkedIn just introduced AI message drafts, which automatically create personalized messages for recruiters, hiring managers, and, honestly, anyone you may be interested in hiring from. Incorporating both of your profiles drafts a thoughtful message. You simply need to review it, add your flair, and hit send. 𝟰. 𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙣 𝙇𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙚𝙙𝙄𝙣 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪. Those who put themselves out there will get the job. My inbox has been flooded with opportunities since I started posting on LinkedIn, and I want you to have those opportunities too. You should update your headline, summary, and skills. Recruiters with a current position get up to four times more views of your profile if you add experience, and recruiters with more than one position get five times more views if you add experience. It takes into account both your and the recipient's profiles. Quick tip for you "Job Hoppers". Many of you have had your resume trashed by layoffs. Your solid tenure is now tarnished with 2-3 jumps. The good news is SaaS firms are aware of this. They won't discount candidates when they know it's from RIFs. But many of you aren't making it obvious on your CV. For each role impacted put "made redundant" in your title. Then underneath, write a quick one-liner: I.e. "Impacted in global RIF, 30% of team reduced." I know it's basic but it will make a big difference.
