In today’s world, #efficiency and #sustainability are at the core of our industry, and it’s always inspiring to witness these values in action.   Last week, our partners at KLM Cityhopper took part in SkyTeam’s Aviation Challenge with a flight to Valencia, aiming to make the journey as sustainable as possible. The results were impressive: using SITA's #OptiClimb technology for takeoff, the flight burned 1% less kerosene—demonstrating how small changes can make a significant impact. SITA's OptiClimb service uses advanced data analytics to optimize aircraft takeoff, helping airlines reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. This innovative paint decreases each aircraft's weight by 27 kilograms, leading to significant fuel savings and lower carbon emissions.  The airline has already applied this paint to 38 aircraft and plans to implement it across its entire fleet by 2030. Once fully adopted, EasyJet anticipates annual savings of approximately 1,296 tonnes of fuel and a reduction of 4,095 tonnes in CO2 emissions.  This initiative is part of EasyJet's broader sustainability strategy, which includes fleet renewal, operational efficiencies, and airspace modernization. The airline aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, with an interim target of reducing carbon emissions intensity by 35% by 2035.  In addition to the lightweight paint, EasyJet has implemented other measures to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. A long journey with a great result :-) Sustainable Taxiing CONOPS was fully accepted and approved by Airport Operations Team 27 on the 16 May 2024.   It is a rather long read, but interesting and forward looking document that the Task Force co-chaired by Pascal Hop (Eurocontrol) and Eugene Leeman (ACI Europe) put together. All key industry stakeholders actively participated in the work of the Task Force. Airlines, Airports, Ground Handlers, OEMs, ANSPs, EASA/CAAs, IATA, etc. The results of the taskforce were also succesfully presented to the IATA Ground Handlers Conference in Reykjavik.   One of the strongest message we now can convey with regards to sustainable taxiing, is that the reduction-potential of noise, Local Air Quality and Emissions for Sustainable Taxiing (STX) is VERY SIGNIFICANT in comparison to other ATM related reductions. We’ve seen in our analysis that emission reductions up to 400 kg of CO2 are possible (standard LTO taxi-out times, A320 family) which is above the emissions reductions that are expected for an average flight from CP1 implementations! STX solutions should be therefore seriously considered as part of the overall sustainability package of the aviation sector.
