Explanation of suffixes for electrically insulating bearings #Insulate bearing When an electric current passes through a bearing by going from one ring to the other via the rolling elements, damage can occur. At the contact surfaces, the process is similar to electric arc welding where there is a high current density over a small contact surface. The material is heated to temperatures ranging from tempering to melting levels. This causes the appearance of discoloured areas, varying in size, where the material has been tempered, re-hardened or melted. Craters are formed where the material has been melted. Appearance: Single craters in raceways and/or rolling elements. Localized burns in raceways and on rolling elements. Bi-metallic corrosion is a myth and doesn't exist - or does it and it isn't spoken about enough? This occurs when two dissimilar metals come into contact with each other in the presence of an electrolyte, such as water or moisture. The interaction between the two metals, known as electrolysis, causes corrosion and has catastrophic effects on the building envelope structure in just a few years. An example of this is using a Carbon Steel Fastener, which is very anodic (less noble) into an Aluminium Rail/Bracket which is cathodic (more noble) where the fastener is at risk immediately. This is why Fixfast only recommend the use of Stainless Steel Fasteners with Aluminium Brackets/Flashings to prevent this common overlooked issue. Causes: Pitting corrosion often finds its genesis in chloride ions, prevalent in marine environments, coastal regions, and industrial settings where corrosive agents abound. The process typically begins with the breakdown of the passive oxide layer that normally protects stainless steel from corrosion. Characteristics: The distinctive feature of pitting corrosion is the formation of small pits or craters on the metal surface. These minuscule imperfections, often invisible to the naked eye, can compromise the structural integrity of the stainless steel, leading to a reduction in strength and durability. Rapid Progression: What makes pitting corrosion particularly insidious is its propensity for rapid progression. Once initiated, these pits can extend beneath the surface, creating a network of microscale defects that weaken the material over time.
