My 2nd post today on consumer electronics presentations. 🔌⚡😄 Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a PlayStation 5 "Technical Presentation" for tomorrow (Tuesday 9/10). Sony will almost certainly be revealing the heavily rumored PS5 Pro, a mid-generation upgrade for the PlayStation 5 games console. 🎮 👾 I'm realizing I'm more of an enthusiast in this category! Whereas I've been perfectly happy to hold onto my iPhone 11 for years, I've purchased every PlayStation iteration (including the PS4 Pro and the current PS5) early on. Still, even I, although intrigued, will likely not pull the trigger on a PS5 Pro purchase right away. Let's break down the case for/against the PS5 Pro: ❌ Too Soon / Hard Enough to Upgrade People to a Base PS5 The PS5 was released in November 2020 and will soon be 4 years old. That's the halfway mark of a typical console generation, making it technically it a perfectly appropriate time to introduce a mid-gen upgrade. However, it doesn't really FEEL that way, as this generation has gotten off to a slow start. ❌ Lack of Exclusive Games AAA (Big Budget) games have become increasingly expensive and more time-consuming to produce. These very long development cycles means that some of Sony's top dev teams have yet to see their first proper title release for the PS5. Several of Sony's recent major titles, God of War: Ragnarok and Horizon: Forbidden West, released as "cross gen" titles, playable on PS4, making the jump to PS5 seem less necessary. ❌ Expensive! 💰 PS5 Pro will be a high end, luxury product for sure. I've seen rumors of $699. I think a base model of $599 is more likely, but either way, this will be a pricey item, not ideal at a time when inflation is cramping consumers' spending power. ✅ Fidelity vs. Performance Games look amazing on the PS5, but there's a catch. New titles like the excellent Final Fantasy VII Rebirth offer users a choice of Fidelity Mode (4K Resolution, more impressive visuals) vs. Performance Mode (How many Frames Per Second, makes gameplay smoother). I always opt for Performance mode as that smoother feel is more important to me, but forcing this choice is likely the biggest case for the PS5 Pro. Gamers want BOTH 4K Resolution and 60 FPS and are starting to consider these standards/requirements for their games. New games may require a PS5 Pro to deliver against both standards and not require gamers to compromise on either. ✅ Grand Theft Auto Effect 🚗 Rockstar's immensely popular open world series will be a major factor here, with the latest entry (GTA VI) scheduled for Autumn 2025. This title will be pushing boundaries on an immersive world and incredibly technically demanding, while not arriving on PC yet at launch. PS5 Pro will be positioned as the best way to play GTA VI and that alone will be huge. ✅ More Games Are Coming ⏭️ This generation has gotten to a slow start, but other BIG first party titles from Sony are on the way. #videogames #playstation #ps5pro #ps5 #insights

Does anyone else feel like it's too soon to remaster Horizon Zero Dawn? Between requiring a PS login for the new version and removing the older version from digital stores for purchase, they are limiting their player access. A PlayStation account isn't supported in many countries and I doubt the remastered game will be compatible on a steam deck like the current version is. it's already a beautiful game that was only recently brought to PC. In my opinion, if you're still actively selling copies of your original game, it's too soon to remaster it, let alone make it the only true version of the game. Remastering should be about giving fresh life to a classic that folks can't access or play anymore. I hope Sony does the right thing and leaves the classic version in stores and/or removes the PS login requirement.

(EN) Helldivers 2 Faces Backlash Over PSN Linking: Steam Reviews Drop to 'Mixed It seems that the recent update requiring players to link a PSN account in Helldivers 2 has sparked significant controversy, leading to a drop in Steam reviews from 'Mostly Positive' to 'Mixed.' Over 100,000 new reviews have been left as 'Mostly Negative,' reflecting the dissatisfaction of players with this requirement. Arrowhead CEO Jhan Pilestedt has issued an apology for the backlash, stating that it was not their decision but rather a mandate from Sony. Additionally, Sony updated its PSN linking page, changing the wording to indicate that linking may be required for some PlayStation games. This change has implications for players in countries where PSN is not available, as they may now be unable to play Helldivers 2 if they cannot access PSN. Attempts to circumvent this using VPNs, a violation of Sony's terms of service, have reportedly resulted in bans for some players. Despite the negative reviews, player numbers have remained relatively stable, with around 120,000 peak concurrent players since May 1 according to SteamDB.
