Mike S is now an animal rescuer in Pennsylvania dedicating each day to ensuring our furry friends have safe and loving homes. This is Mike's Kmart Studio photo from 1975. Mike still looks back at his childhood memories of Kmart with fondness.
It was certainly a time of colorful styles.

Failing to spay and neuter dogs and cats has led to an increase in mistreated and abandoned pets, as well as additional pressure on overcrowded shelters.
World Spay Day doesn’t necessarily celebrate animal sterilisation, but instead educates pet owners how it can save millions of animals' lives and reduce the number of unwanted pets living rough. Find out more benefits of neutering your pet here: https://ow.ly/58s950QIemp.

Earlier in my public service career along with my parks team, I explored animal shelter diversion when I didn't yet know what it was. Once I made the transition to animal services I implemented that program and more in a quest to end the killing of companion animals in my community.
Healthy pets do not belong in animal shelters if we can keep them with their families and find alternatives. The shelter environment, try as we might, is a place where one behavior incident or disease outbreak could cost them their lives.
This article is part of Best Friends Animal Society no-kill 101 series, where we discuss crucial ways that each of us can be part of ending the practice of killing pets in our local shelters. It’s to clarify what no-kill in animal sheltering is and what it isn’t. Our goal at Best Friends is for all shelters in all communities to reach no-kill in 2025, and residents in every community play a key role.
It's short. Please give it a read and share with those that might benefit from it.
You know, I have to get this off my chest about all the horrifying pics of animals suffering. It upsets me to my core to see pictures like this above, people take the time to post them of animals suffering. We all can imagine the horrors of what animals suffer and go through mostly, that has to do with humans involved, in some way. The first and foremost empathic thing to do is help the animal, not take pictures or videos, things like this makes me want to quit social media, isn't this supposed to be a career networking site? I am starting to really think about having second thoughts about this. I have rescued animals, had the media involved to break the case to shut down a shelter, I did not have time to take pictures nor did I want to of some of the animals that died from being so sick. The day I helped move them out of the shelter. the only time I needed to show the animals was at the shelter as I walked through it with someone videoing the shelter for the news station, so people could join in to help support me on trying to shut it down. How can anyone just snap pictures, this as an example, just watch the pup as it was clearly disabled and can hardly walk, suffering, just kept on videoing, why not take videos or pictures, of you are someone saving the animal! that is what needs to be seen! I will never understand people and on what level their mind works! this applies to everyone not just to this person, so please understand, what I am trying to explain.

“One Sale, One Shelter”. The characters from “Shep Learns A Lesson” were created with shelter dogs in mind. The character of “Chevy” is based on my own rescue dog, Chevy, who literally changed my life for the better: more than words could ever describe. A portion of each book sale goes to animal shelters in need. #rescuedogs#writersandauthors#childrensauthors#animalshelters#socialemotionalskills
An Unintended Consequence of the Pandemic: Animal shelters across the U.S. are facing a heartbreaking surge in the number of dogs being surrendered. ICYMI. The ARL took in 46 MORE dogs from the SAME commercial breeder we rescued nearly 100 dogs from last fall.
As a community, we have to ask more questions.
👉🏼Why does this continue to happen?
👉🏼Why was this licensed commercial breeder allowed the opportunity to reoffend?
👉🏼What changes need to be made from the agencies who oversee licensed breeders on the inspection/licensing process so this doesn’t continue to happen?
👉🏼How do we ensure commercial breeders are giving adequate care, physically and mentally, to the animals under their supervision?
👉🏼How many more animals have to suffer before changes are made?

Deputy Chief Paul Acosta even found his “FUREVER” friend. 🐶
Thank you to all who came out. If you missed it, remember, you can always visit the Miami-Dade Animal Shelter to adopt.

5moWay to go, Mike! I wish I had been smart enough to get into the animal field when I was younger.
