To be a commissioning engineer one day … 😊 I found it interesting period in any engineer’s life and days to remember ! Rounding between projects from different cities, living in our laptop and luggage, changing hotels, cars, and finding lot of airline ticket slips in our bags. Colleagues on phone used to say, “where are you today before asking how are you today”. 😄 I really miss those days, those peoples whom I knew, discussed, sometimes argued, and especially when we have commissioning with deadline before plants powering up, or limited shutdown period. 😬 Sleeping with fault indication blinking in our mind and hardly waiting for the next day to go site for finding that fault to rectify, but it is time also to build huge experience in technical and personal levels, it is time to gather nice memories full of joy, success, and sometimes disappointing things as well ☺️ I hope all new engineers will get that chance, and I encourage them to take this adventure with all those challenges, it will add familiarity, mastering the system which they working on, plus ability on creativity, inventing, and improving more which encapsulated with fruitful experience. ☺️ 😀

Over the past few months, I’ve had the opportunity to lead our technician team as interim Automation Technician Supervisor. I’m excited to dive back into my regular role with some new perspective, relationships, and key learnings from managing a 24/7 team: ✅ Look for communication gaps and plug them QUICKLY. 🎯 In a contract manufacturing world, new info and priorities are the norm. Take ownership and be the person that ensures all the pieces are together. ✅ Your best resources are your colleagues, on your team and within your organization. 🎯 Pay it forward and strive to be a great teammate, it’ll set the foundation for when you need to ask for help or favors. ✅ Raise your hand. 🎯 Jump at the task others are hesitant to take on, offer your opinion on a tricky path forward, and ask the question that feels “dumb” in your head. You’ll grow faster and the people around you will be better for it.

As a new Supervisor I tell my technicians, "When troubleshooting an issue the key term is "Opportunity for Failure"". Given a scenario where you have a transmission line (line of communication of any sort) from point A to point B, but there are 3 splices in that line...those splices are each an opportunity for failure. A mechanical connection that for a Litney of reasons can fail. A single line from A to B without those splices eliminates those 3 opportunities for failure. It is very simple logical concept applied to the troubleshooting process. With experience, that some of my technicians have much of, you learn what the points of failure are within your field. This is the most basic of examples regarding the concept, but if you approach every issue/repair ticket/install/problem with the thought process of eliminating "Opportunity For Failure", you maximize your "Opportunity For Success!".

Field Service Engineers (FSEs), like reliable Timex watches, endure considerable job stress, but persevere through their challenges. In the realm of equipment companies, FSEs most often bear the brunt of customer frustrations when machinery malfunctions. These situations often entail unrealistic demands and heightened aggression from customers, creating significant stress for FSEs. However, this stress isn't usually personal; it stems from equipment failures leading to substantial revenue losses for customers, such as Intel facing millions in losses per hour during machine downtime in semiconductor manufacturing. Drawing from my extensive experience managing a global network of FSEs, I've witnessed the toll this environment takes. Many FSEs experience burnout and leave due to customer pressures, while others lose motivation and coast toward retirement. Neither outcome is ideal. Over the past decade, I've implemented a transformative program called Total Customer Focus (TCF) by Global Partners Training LLC. This program equips FSEs with vital skills to navigate high-stress scenarios, teaching them how to defuse tense situations and facilitate productive discussions. Additionally, we emphasize building strong customer relationships to enhance loyalty and trust. To date, we've trained over 3,000 FSEs globally, with ongoing training efforts each year. What's most gratifying is our clients' continued investment in these programs, driven by tangible improvements reported by their FSEs. Their reported data consistently shows impressive returns on investment (ROIs) ranging from 5-10X and beyond. FSEs also frequently note a marked improvement in their work environment with reduced stress levels, showcasing the program's effectiveness. If you would like to learn more about TCF, contact me at mikewolf1025@gmail.com
