If you had to name the most essential qualities for being successful with a creative career, chances are “passion” would be on or near the top of the list. Creatives like architects, graphic designers, advertisers, artists, musicians etc., are presumed to be motivated by the inherent joy and meaning of their work, rather than a paycheck or some other concrete reward. And it’s true—many creatives love what they do. I blink, check a message, prepare dinner, and suddenly, my kids are older. I hear my daughter parking in our garage, unloading a handful of groceries she picked up for me at the last minute. My phone rings and my son’s long-distance number pops up on the screen, my baby figures out how to climb onto the dining room table. Time flies, and I struggle to keep up. In the whirlwind of design deadlines and family life, I sometimes long for uninterrupted focus. But then I remember the beauty of this chaos. It’s in these messy, unpredictable moments that I find inspiration for my work. Some days, I want to fast-forward to a time when I can fully dive into my career. But in the same breath, I want to freeze these moments, to remind my children how loved they are and to witness their growth. My kids know that during the day I work for 14Minds. What does Mommy really do each day? They’re not sure. They overheard me speaking about the behavioral health facility that we recently branded. They took a peek at my screen as I reviewed a pitch deck for Chai Lifeline New Jersey’s stunning new center for families. They’ve seen drafted AI images of caregivers and loved ones. They know that [unlike a lot of other working mothers ;] I love my job and am grateful every day for opportunities to do meaningful creative work. They can’t tell you for certain what it means to be an art director. BUT they can confidently tell you one thing: in and out of the office, when Mommy has extra pockets of time, she tries to do creative, fun things. I didn’t tell them I was designing the artwork for this week’s Treeo cover… I decided to surprise them with it. And the looks on their faces were priceless. It's not the first time I did it, but their response never gets old. These small, creative moments bring so much joy. And in the midst of all the deadlines and chaos... these moments of joy make it all worthwhile. #AIrtDirection #DesignLife #FamilyBalance

I called him The Puppeteer. We'd do the meeting before the meeting thing and he'd tell me exactly how the meeting was going to go, and then, in the meeting—it (almost always) went exactly to script. It was remarkable to watch. But it wasn't literal string-pulling abilities that made him so good. No, now I realize it was a finely honed skill of sensemaking. Getting better at making sense of ambiguous work situations, so that we can take appropriate action, is something we can practice as well. The Wall Street Journal, New Headache for Bosses: EMPLOYEES AREN'T QUITTING! The white-collar labor market is softening to a point that companies are encountering an issue that would have been unthinkable in the era known as the #greatresignation. These days, too few people are voluntarily leaving their jobs. The U.S. is now experiencing the #greatretirement, with more than two million retirees leaving the workforce for good. This is where the turnover is today. Turnover has declined so steeply at some large employers that companies now find themselves over budget on certain teams, requiring leaders to weigh whether to postpone projects or to cut additional staff as the end of year approaches. Other bosses worry about how to keep star employees engaged when there are far fewer vacant positions internally, making it harder to move people into new roles. Listen: Make up your minds, Corporate America. Companies sputter in disgust if you left your previous employer too soon. We just had "The Great Resignation." Elder generations love to peddle, "People just don't want to work anymore!" Yet, suddenly we're not quitting enough? Pick a lane. I imagine more of the workforce would be game to hit the road if human existence were less expensive but, alas–here we are. Pro tip: Offer some top-tier pension and severance packages. Just bribe us to leave, okay? Okay. Glad we had this talk.

Returning to work after a Xmas break can feel like this; admittedly I laughed at this from Jeremy Clarkson and instantly went to Option B. Our mind goes to ‘here comes another big year’…. Where do I start? Shall I clear out last years inbox before I start on Monday? I might need those emails though. What will this year bring!? Am I expected to outperform last year with new insights and projects? Can I fill those difficult roles that have circulated on my dash? (I will certainly be aiming too) Will my hiring leads and stakeholders continue to be supportive, open to change and challenge and expect good things whilst understanding the market? A few momentary notions of what we or I contemplate for the start of my new working year. But they are all things, that are important to me and how I perform and like to work. …..So they enter my thoughts. My motto is: Prepare but don’t despair Listen; suggest; but still learn - always learn Be a positive force in your role - ‘trusted advisor’ and team member Have a humour… work is just work. In my line - ‘our commodity is people’ so it comes with laughs and unexpected situations. Deal with those situations. Resolve, respect and recognise. You can’t control it all! Start the year with a renewed or calm mindset if you can- as businesses evolve and they do year on year - you can too. Meanwhile don’t put pressure on your capability, I won’t be :) Happy work year all! #recrutimentcareers
