Essential Workers in 2020 got the shaft, and it hasn’t gotten much better. Don’t end your story, take a day off, take two days off. Idc, don’t end your life, your family is not better without you. Hang in there. “The construction industry has one of the highest suicide rates among professions — with the rate among male construction workers 75% higher than men in the general population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An estimated 6,000 construction workers died as a result of suicide in 2022, an increase from 2021, according to the most recent data available. That compares to around 1,000 who died from a construction work-related injury. “ https://lnkd.in/eKQVTsxx

🛣️ Addressing the Pothole Plague: nearly £140m filling in two million potholes over the last 12 months 🚧 The recent Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance (ALARM) report report has highlighted the critical state of our local road network, with a staggering backlog repair cost of £16.3 billion looming over England and Wales. As we confront this infrastructure challenge, it's clear that new streetworks workers will be essential in tackling the growing pothole problem. The survey found that more than 107,000 miles of local authority roads could need to be rebuilt within the next 15 years while surface conditions have also declined, despite spending nearly £140m filling in two million potholes over the last 12 months. With more than half of the road network at risk of failing within the next 15 years, the demand for skilled professionals to carry out repairs and maintenance tasks is set to rise. Training these workers to high standards is crucial to ensure that streetworks are completed efficiently and effectively, preserving the safety and quality of our roads for all users. In addition to increased funding and strategic planning, investing in the training and development of streetworks workers is paramount to addressing the deteriorating road conditions. By equipping these individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge, we can strive towards a more sustainable and resilient road infrastructure system. Let's advocate for the importance of workforce development in the road maintenance sector and support initiatives that promote the training and upskilling of streetworks workers. Together, we can work towards a future where our roads are safe, smooth, and well-maintained for generations to come. At Pragmatic we have been proudly supporting the industry through excellent NRSWA training courses. We love helping to create new opportunities for individuals with the right skills and expertise. This month members of Congress, led by U.S. Representative John Joyce (PA), introduced House Concurrent Resolution (H.Con.Res.) 96. This resolution expresses the view that design professional licensure (including architects, engineers, and surveyors) is critical to public health, safety, and welfare. It recognizes the essential role these professions play in our economy and sends a clear signal to states that they should not compromise these professions in occupational licensing reform efforts. While non-binding, the introduction of H.Con.Res. 96 makes a powerful statement. Rep. Joyce, as a medical doctor himself and the son of a Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor, understands firsthand the importance of professional licensure. As states continue to face threats to licensure, H.Con.Res. 96 should serve as a catalyst for state-level advocacy efforts. By informing state legislators about the resolution and its implications for occupational licensing reform, stakeholders can encourage them to support policies that uphold the integrity of professional licensure. https://bit.ly/3TzDCj4
