What does Jay-Z have to do with school budgets? Quite a lot, actually. In recent months, Jay-Z has played a key role in the school voucher debate, citing student's need for choice when it comes to attending private schools. What is a school voucher? Vouchers are tax-funded scholarships that allow students to attend private schools of their choice, often supported by advocates as a means to increase educational options and opportunities, particularly for disadvantaged students in underperforming public schools. Jay-Z's involvement in the school voucher debate revolves around his support for educational reform initiatives that include vouchers. In recent months, Team Roc (the philanthropic foundation under Jay-Z's company) has poured huge marketing dollars into a localized awareness campaign intended to educate taxpayers on the value of school vouchers. A new way to fund state schools - a generous donation similar to the Guild and Faith systems of extra funding for state schools but with more money for one school. I am surprised that the unforeseen consequences, mentioned here, are not seen by someone with such a clear vision of a future world; it makes one wonder if they have any real understanding about state schools, their funding and their impact on each other and the local community. The recent reports by the Sutton Trust on the disparity between schools in rich and poor areas would, perhaps, be worth sharing with the donors. Isn’t this the sort of funding that every school and every child deserves? - to learn in an environment as described here and to receive a high quality of education appropriately funded.

There is a mass exodus of teachers who are saying goodbye to teaching. Schools are not getting adequate funding to operate. Now, elementary school students in Minnesota are raising money ($70,000 at that) to save their classroom from receiving the ax?! How can we do right by our kiddos - our future leaders? They deserve better. #StudentsDeserveQualityEducation #TeacherShortage #Education #ProximityLearning #SaveTheClassroom

👨🏫📋🏫🎒 1. **Independently Managed**: Charter schools are publicly funded but operate independently of the traditional public school system. They are often governed by nonprofit organizations, community groups, or for-profit entities, under a charter or contract with a sponsoring authority, such as a school district, university, or state education agency. 2. **Flexibility**: Charter schools have more flexibility than traditional public schools in terms of curriculum, hiring practices, budget management, and instructional methods. This flexibility allows them to innovate and tailor their educational programs to meet the specific needs of their students. 3. **Autonomy**: Charter schools have autonomy in decision-making, allowing them to implement unique educational approaches and programs. This autonomy is intended to encourage experimentation and innovation in education. 4. **Accountability**: While charter schools have autonomy, they are also held accountable for their performance. They must meet academic and operational standards outlined in their charter agreements, and they can be closed if they fail to meet these standards. 5. **School Choice**: Charter schools offer parents and students an alternative to traditional public schools, providing greater choice in education. Families may choose charter schools based on factors such as academic focus, teaching philosophy, or extracurricular offerings. 6. **Public Funding**: Charter schools receive public funding, typically based on student enrollment, similar to traditional public schools. However, they may also seek additional funding through grants, donations, or partnerships with private organizations. 7. **Open Enrollment**: In many cases, charter schools are open to all students regardless of their neighborhood or district boundaries. They often use a lottery system to admit students if there are more applicants than available spots. #talentserve TalentServe #charterschools

It's back-to-school time in our house, a mix of emotions. At work, we've got a new project that has all the upsides - new learning, new ways of thinking. Unite Foundation is working with our long-term partner and champion, Unite Students, and with think tank Social Market Foundation to dig deeper into understanding estranged and care experienced students’ experiences of access, progression and success at university. Unite Foundation's work is driven by the fact that only 14% of care-experienced young people are in higher education at age 19, compared to 47% of the general population. Estranged students face similar challenges to care leavers but with less support available to them. We have over a decade of evidence that confirms if these young people are guaranteed safe, secure accommodation at university - something parents often help pay for and arrange - they’re as likely as any other student to complete their degree and with a good grade. Working with Unite Students and our university partners we ensure Unite Foundation students who don’t have ‘parent privilege’ (as Unite Foundation graduate Paige Mackenzie BA (Hons) perfectly puts it) are fully supported in terms of their housing needs - and it works. We want this to happen for more care experienced and estranged young people, and in more areas of their lives. Aveek Bhattacharya and Dani Payne at the Social Market Foundation are compiling existing evidence and insight from academia and civil society, to consider what further actions are needed and what could easily happen right now with the energy and commitment of the new Labour government. How can universities, local authorities, the government and other stakeholders better ‘parent’ and support care-experienced and estranged young people in accessing, staying in, and thriving at university? Back-to-school also means many young people around the country are preparing to start university and every new student joining the Unite Foundation scholarship is gifted £200 to spend on what they choose to make their house a home. Bedding, kettles, blankets, storage. We are fundraising now, and you can have the privilege of being the ‘parent privilege’ for a care experienced or estranged student starting at university in the next few weeks. Find out more and donate whatever you can here https://lnkd.in/evStA8Pg or text KITOUT to 70580 to donate £10.

We flourish today thanks to the generosity of Old Etonians, parents and friends and we will advance further as that tradition grows. The gifts we receive help us to develop in so many areas. They underpin our transformative Bursaries Programme and enable us to develop powerful partnerships outside the walls of Eton. Those walls themselves have also been strengthened, restored and renewed, ensuring that our facilities provide an appropriate setting for the world-class teaching that takes place within. All this is founded on the strength of support we receive from so many Old Etonians, parents and friends. Through gifts at all levels, both to the endowment and to current programmes, our community of benefactors enables so much of what makes Eton special. Philanthropy is also key to the delivery of our new initiative, the Eton Star Schools Programme, through which we aim to share our resources and expertise to support the great task of reducing educational inequality in the UK. In a world where the future of public education is under intense scrutiny, the Education Future Fund stands as a beacon of hope and action. The Raikes Foundation is proud to be in partnership with other critical philanthropies to counter the culture wars that have infiltrated our school districts. With a mission to protect inclusive, equitable, and safe education for all students, we are committed to supporting public schools at the forefront of these challenges. The recent surge in book bans and educational gag orders is a stark reminder of the stakes involved. However, the collective efforts of our coalition, which has already granted $14 million in pooled funds and aims to inspire even more significant aligned funding, show the power of unity in addressing these issues. Our involvement is not just about funding; it's about affirming our belief in public education as the cornerstone of a strong democracy. Together, we can ensure a future where every child has access to an education that reflects the diversity and richness of our society. Let's stand united for our schools, our students, and the very foundation of our democracy. #EducationFutureFund #PublicEducation #PhilanthropyInAction https://bit.ly/3PDZGXo

Richest Private Schools in the UK: A Look at Wealth and Access in Education The landscape of private education in the United Kingdom is characterized by a small number of institutions that are not only centres of academic excellence but also exemplars of financial opulence and exclusivity. These schools cater to the upper echelons of society, reinforcing a cycle of privilege with their steep tuition fees and significant endowments. Premier Institutions and Their Tuition Fees • Eton College: Synonymous with prestige and privilege, Eton charges substantial fees that reflect its storied history and its role in educating many of the nation’s leaders. • Winchester College: Known for its rigorous academics and exclusive admissions, Winchester commands one of the highest tuition rates in the country, securing its place among the elite. • Harrow School: With a legacy of educating historical figures such as Winston Churchill, Harrow’s fees are as grand as its reputation. • Wycombe Abbey: As a leading independent girls’ school, Wycombe Abbey’s tuition rates are on par with the most expensive schools in the nation. These elite schools leverage not only their high tuition fees but also substantial endowments and donations. Their charitable status often enhances their ability to gather financial resources, thereby furthering their reach and capabilities. Notable Alumni Contributions Contributions from alumni are a significant financial pillar for many private schools: • Saffron Hall: This state-funded institution has received one of the largest known private donations to a UK school, greatly enhancing its educational provisions. • Ark Schools: As a prominent academy trust, it benefits from millions in yearly donations, which support its expansive educational endeavors. • London Oratory and Grey Coat Hospital School: Both schools have secured significant sums in donations which bolster their funding and educational offerings. Economic Disparities and Educational Opportunities The financial robustness of these schools allows them to offer unmatched educational opportunities, creating a stark division between those who can afford such education and those who cannot. This economic divide is evident in their fundraising successes, which are generally more substantial in wealthier areas, potentially widening the gap in educational achievement between different socio-economic groups. This disparity raises important questions about the influence of wealth on educational access and quality. It underscores a pressing debate on how society can address these inequalities to ensure a more equitable educational landscape for all students, irrespective of their economic background.
