↪️ Hire Juniors and Mid Level Graphic Designers Too ↩️ In the graphic design industry, there seems to be a growing trend of companies hiring only senior designers. I've noticed as a graphic designer myself that the industry often bypasses the junior and mid-level stage, pushing professionals directly into senior roles. This trend raises an important question: how are we, graphic designers expected to grow into senior positions without the chance to grow and develop our skills? The journey to expertise is a gradual one, where each project and experience contributes to one's professional growth. It's a path that should start with a foundation at the junior level, allowing designers to practice their skills, learn from their peers, and gain the practical experience that is so crucial in our field. But in today's job market, it seems we are expected to emerge fully formed as experts, with no room for the learning and development that come with on-the-job experience. It's important to remember that every expert, every senior designer, and every industry leader started somewhere. So, why is there such a reluctance to invest in the potential of junior and mid-level designers? How did our industry's seniors gain their 10 years of experience if not by starting at the beginning? We need to create an environment that nurtures talent at all levels, recognizing that expertise is not innate. By opening up more opportunities for junior and mid-level designers, we not only foster a more inclusive and dynamic industry but a job market that has room for growth and development at all levels. #graphicdesign #graphicdesigners #hiringgraphicdesigner #juniordesigner #midweightdesigner

People that have worked under me all know my mantra. "What's your focus." You may be good at a lot of things, but what are you GREAT at? Then that's what we focus on. That's how we will position you to succeed and be showcased. A lot of people use the "jack of all trades" as a positive thing, which in some ways it can be, but it also sets you up to take on FAR more work than your job description entails. Keep in mind below. For a Sr. Graphic Designer... they want you to be able to do: Graphic Design Character Design 2D/3D Design HTML Coding Web Design CRM systems UI/UX knowledge SEO experience Platform design knowledge and also be a team player. lol. Rich Sherman is right on the money on his take of this. I've run into this personally as well. Yes, I CAN do motion graphics, graphic design, 3D work, etc... but is that what I applied for? The more you know.
This is unacceptable. A friend recently posted a Senior Graphic Designer role, and I was astonished by the extensive requirements. In my time, designers specialized, not tried to master everything. Companies should stop expecting all-in-one employees; greatness requires a collaborative team effort. Expecting one person to excel at everything is unrealistic and diminishes potential greatness. Creative Directors and hiring managers, reconsider these expectations for a more realistic and effective approach. ……especially for a Sr Graphic Designer. #hiring #jobseekers #hiringmanagers #designer

Brand Designer | Google UX Professional | does good work but doesn’t do “interview tests”, “spec work” or “task” . I believe they give a bad image to employees, employers and the industry
Should also turn water into wine, quickly

I wholeheartedly agree, working together as a team is super important if we want to achieve greatness. It's not fair to expect every Graphic Designer, or any professional for that matter, to be amazing at everything. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, and when we work together in a collaborative environment, we can use those strengths and weaknesses to come up with more creative and effective results. Plus, if we stick to strict experience requirements, we might miss out on some talented individuals who bring fresh perspectives and skills to the table. Companies need to realize the value of different experiences and create a place where professionals can shine based on what they're best at. I'm just an ordinary person and a designer, and honestly, I don't really care about counting how many years of experience I have in design. Instead of stressing over the number of years of experience, I think it's better to embrace the journey and the ups and downs that come with it. Because honestly, the number of years doesn't define our story as designers. Let's focus on pushing our limits and being limitless in our creativity. 🧝♀️ 😇 🙏

Freelance Designer & Developer | Teacher | Content Creator, Helping companies to stand out by creating strong visual concepts that lead to higher conversion rates
The trend goes on and on ! Nowadays a Graphic Designer = ['Web Developer', 'UI/UX Designer', 'SEO Specialist', 'Motion Designer'], basically a whole digital team ! In the past, designers used to specialize rather than aiming to master every skill. It's time for companies to rethink their expectations and move away from seeking all-in-one employees. Achieving greatness in design demands collaborative teamwork rather than placing unrealistic burdens on individuals. Hiring managers should reconsider their approach, opting for more realistic expectations to foster genuine effectiveness.

Experienced Team Leader in Digital Marketing @ Everwise Credit Union | Digital Marketing Strategy | Websites | Analytics | HubSpot
10000% this. Digital marketing right now is also being a jack of all trades, but everyone has to have an expertise (you don't want to be a master of none!). For success, the team must work together, listen, and learn more from those who have different proficiencies and perspectives. This is how you build a wholistic campaign (design, etc.). Companies want less people to do more work. This may save on salary, but in the end they will suffer losses from people's inability to focus and excel in exchange for just getting things done. Less payroll does not = more revenue.

Thank you for this take, Rich. In my opinion, this goes for all fields. For me it's been difficult to find postings where I'm the right applicant for the job because of certain requirements. That being said, it doesn't hurt to apply and give what you already have instilled within you. What do you have to lose? NOTHING. If you believe you are qualified and meet most, if not all, of the requirements listed, why not give it a go? I ask you all this: Don't stop applying. Don't stop posting. Don't stop networking. Don't. Stop. Period. I believe in you. Don't give up. You got this. We got this. Thank you for reading my post. #opentowork #editor #editing #proofreader #proofreading #publishing #jobseeker #seekingwork #seekingemployment

Art Director, Sr. Brand Designer, Art Licensing & Children's Book Illustrator, Graphic Designer, and Fine Artist with 15+ years experience. Available for full-time, part-time, contract and remote/hybrid roles.
So glad to hear this seasoned Art Director write about this. I was just speaking about this the other day myself. After several years of being self-employed as an Art Director and Sr Brand Designer (and subcontracting specialists for various tasks and newer technologies I couldn't do myself), I'm casually looking into working for an agency again. It's been shocking to see so many job advertisements that expect expert experience in many different specialist areas. Graphic Designers are now expected to be 2d designers, 3d designers, UX /UI designers, illustrators, web develop3"ers, web designers, animators, marketing strategists, photographers, photo editors, videographers, video editors, copywriters...the list goes on. It's even more shocking when you see low-ball salaries attached to these roles. As brand strategists/designers we often speak to our clients about niching down (aka it's better to be an expert at one thing, than mediocre at many things), yet how many agencies are trying to hire these multi-specialist generalists, who, let's face it, are probably not multi-specialists and only try to look like that on paper?
