Persuasion is not an exact science, but an art. Earlier this week I had the opportunity to facilitate an informational session on the Art of Persuasion in collaboration with Lyla Eddington and Brandon Currin. This session was delivered to the statewide K-12 Strong Workforce Program Key Talent Team whose responsibility is to guide and enhance the partnerships between K-12 districts, community colleges, workforce development boards, and employers. My colleagues and I shared four tips to increase one's effectiveness to persuade systems to collaborate. The four tips as identified in Jay Conger's research article, The Necessary Art of Persuasion, are to establish credibility on a given topic or strategy, identify common goals, reinforce one's position as a resource, and emotionally connect with one's audience. As an educator and workforce development professional, I see myself exercising these tips on a daily basis. However, in this work it is important to understand that developing strong partnerships stems from having even stronger relationships which takes time to nurture. The work we facilitate as conveners is one of collaboration, vision, but most importantly...of understanding and patience.
