💡 𝗞𝗥𝟮𝟭 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘀𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 🤔 What if we lived in a world where libraries could lend eBooks just like physical ones, ensuring access to and preservation of culture and knowledge in the digital era? 🗣️ “Libraries should be allowed to acquire works in a digital format of their choice so that they can retain control over the environment in which they provide works,” advocates Justus Dreyling, Policy Director at COMMUNIA. 💭 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄? This can be unlocked through Controlled Digital Lending (CDL). The best thing about it: the Court of Justice of the European Union confirmed CDL is legal and permitted! Now it’s time for EU Member States to strengthen this in their national legislation. Even then, two major barriers still stand in the way of widespread CDL adoption: 🔹 Technological Protection Measures (TPMs), and 🔹 Abusive contractual provisions (contract override). 👀 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝘂𝘀’ 𝗞𝗥𝟮𝟭 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘀𝘂𝗹𝗲: https://lnkd.in/efdMwekf 📺 𝙂𝙤 & 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙚𝙨 👉 https://lnkd.in/e6arAdfS 𝙊𝙧 𝙛𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝙪𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖 𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙠𝙡𝙮 𝙙𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙩 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙡𝙚𝙙𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧, 𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢 & 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙚! #KnowledgeCapsules #eBooks #eLending #eBookSOS #libraries #CDL #ControlledDigitalLending #SDL #TPMs #TechnologicalProtectionMeasures #ContractOverride #AbusiveContracts #AccessToKnowledge #AccessToCulture

💯 True literacy- reading AND writing! I always think of Dr. Julie Washington, “WRITING is a mirror to what students know.” Just because they can read it doesn’t mean that they can spell it, but if they can spell it, AND they know why they’re spelling it, they can most likely read the word. Dr. Louisa Moats speaks about this. Spelling is more complex; spelling must be exact. Reading is not this way. If a word is in our oral lexicon and we have some decoding skills, we may be able to read it with comprehension. Spelling (encoding) is a more reliable measure of mastery and mapping.

Another talk that today's academic publishing ecosystem is "broken" and not meeting the users' needs. I wasn't in attendance, but I've seen enough posts and articles like this to suspect many users and funders agree with that sentiment. Yet there is widespread resistance to exploring new publishing channels that better match how people read and share information today. Why such resistance? Innovative companies are breaking through in all kinds of industries and fields, yet the (very) old school publishing model remains entrenched, despite frequent talks like this. Reach out to see how we are working to redesign peer-reviewed publications to be faster, less costly, and more accessible. #researchpost #publications #peerreviewed #openaccess #medcomms #innovation

“The implicit contract is broken”, says Judith Fathallah. Publishing is not delivering the same benefits to today’s “precarious academics” as it did for previous cohorts. #OASPA2024 #publishing
