One of the top takeaways from #JPM2024: The rate of denials has hurt provider/payer relationships. “I know denials are up across the country, but I have never seen [the rate of denials] like we’re experiencing here in California," one CFO shared. Heading out to #vive2024, and I'm curious to hear what folks are thinking. I've got three topics on my mind: 1. #MedicaidRedetermination We predicted that millions would be disenrolled - we went from in might happen to it's happening to it's getting worse. It's my belief that a fundamental issue is lack of ownership - who owns ensuring patients who qualify continue to benefit from Medicaid? Who owns ensuring patients get equitable and necessary care regardless of payer? 2. #Access - one of healthcare's biggest challenges. Some of my thoughts were also included in my interview with Giuliana Grossi for AJMC - The American Journal of Managed Care, specifically about financial and capacity challenges that create barriers to care. What are the top 3 obstacles to address to unlock access to care? 3. #Data The average hospital produces roughly 50 petabytes of data every year, which amounts to 137 terabytes per day. 97% of all data produced by hospitals each year goes unused, according to the World Economic Forum. Health systems are assuming all of the risk but doing very little to reap the reward by using this data to improve patient engagement and drive better outcomes. Why? I have thoughts! Stop by and let's discuss - I'll be at booth #2130!
For AJMC - The American Journal of Managed Care, Upfront co-founder and COO Carrie Kozlowski continues her #MedicaidRedetermination conversation with editor Giuliana Grossi to review the questions: Who's responsible for enrolling patients in #Medicaid to ensure continuing care? And: How does Upfront's omnichannel communication engage and motivate patients to seek health services to prevent health system revenue leakage and care gaps? The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Innovation Center continues to test new provider delivery models and payment systems to reduce cost and improve outcomes. Telehealth, remote patient monitoring, patient portals, home-based care, and other technology driven innovations can be found in these new models. But I have to ask, with all the data sharing, technology, and remote care capabilities, why do we continue to struggle to provide comprehensive medical and social care to Medicare and Medicaid insureds?

Mark Cuban and Glen Tullman closed out CES last week with some thoughts on the future of healthcare and how technology is at the center of it. Their advice to healthcare execs: Do more by doing less. "Health systems and hospitals are embracing the technology as a means of reducing administrative and data-intensive tasks, giving clinicians more time to focus on healthcare delivery and giving consumers an easier path to that care." #erisa #erisarecovery #erisaappeals #revenuecycle #revenuecyclemanagement #rcm #healthcarefinance #healthit #healthcareit #hospitalfinance #hospitalmanagement #denials #claimdenials #denialmanagement #denialsmanagement #healthcare #ces2024

Bills we're watching: H.R. 7623 The House Energy & Commerce Health Subcommittee recently advanced a two-year extension of Medicare Telehealth payment policies to the full Energy & Commerce Committee. The Telehealth Modernization Act of 2024 includes a 2-year extension of current policies and ensures Medicare reimburses Telehealth visits at the same rate as in-person visits. This payment parity language, along with other policy extensions, passed the subcommittee with a 21-0 bipartisan vote. The bill is now headed to the House floor. Additionally, the legislation extends the Medicare acute hospital at home program for five years. #Healthcare #Medicare #Telehealth #Legislation #BipartisanVote #HouseFloor #PolicyExtension

9moDenials are up across the board. Educating patients and staff on how to prevent the denial is becoming more effective. This includes patient education on eligibility and coordination of benefits and staff on authorization and payer policies.
