The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma will double the area of pasture to make room for growing their herd past an existing 650 bison. The funding will also support a market study for the feasibility of selling bison products to a wider Oklahoman market. The Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota will leverage the funds to build a 10,000-acre pasture on tribal lands to support expanding their 250-strong herd. The expansion will allow for an eventual capacity of 4,000 bison. The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of the Fort Hall Reservation in Idaho plans to grow its herd from 465 to roughly 1,100 by purchasing additional buffalo and developing their bison-raising operations with more staff and economic development. https://lnkd.in/gfiuVQa7

NGOs occasionally introduce bees to rural communities as part of development initiatives. Recognizing the potential repercussions of Africanized bees on local ecosystems is paramount. Equally crucial is acknowledging the potential benefits of utilizing native bees, such as Meliponini in Mesoamerica, which may prove more advantageous and less environmentally detrimental. Thanks Rony for sharing this video documenting the threat of non-native bees to macaws communities in the Mayan Forest.
Africanized bees are fierce competitors for nesting cavities and can pose a threat to young macaw chicks, reducing the Index of Fledgling Success in the Maya Forest. Thankfully, these two chicks survived the attack, but many others were not as fortunate

Did you know that in 1997, there were just 11 bitterns recorded in the UK? 😓 The bittern is a cryptic and secretive member of the heron family. You'll be very lucky to see a bittern thanks to their amazing camoflauge, but male bitterns make themselves known with their notorious 'booms' — which make this bird the loudest in the UK! Unfortunately, bittern populations plummeted from the 1870s, primarily due to habitat loss and direct persecution from humans, and even as recently as 1997, there were just 11 recorded bitterns in the whole of the UK. Thankfully, bittern populations have since increased dramatically, and the Avalon Marshes have become a bittern stronghold. Annual bittern surveys are now conducted in this area, which have shown encouraging increases. In 2023, a fantastic 38 'booming' male bitterns were recorded in this area alone. 👏 The bittern is one of Somerset's 'wildlife winners'!
