The current state of coal transportation to Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) raises concerns as the tonnage reaches its lowest point since 1992. Addressing this challenge requires a comprehensive overhaul and effective leadership at Transnet. In 2024, the nation pins its economic hopes on the ongoing upgrades, yet the need for capable individuals steering Transnet is paramount. Government intervention, coupled with strategic Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), could pave the way for efficiency at Transnet and RBCT. The recent R4.7 billion guarantee from the treasury department signals a commitment to improvement. This financial support, coupled with the right leadership and PPPs, is instrumental in fostering positive change. To truly transform the coal transportation landscape, it's crucial for Transnet to break away from historical practices. Opening up opportunities for young emerging mining companies and ending gatekeeping practices at RBCT and MPT ports will inject diversity and competition, contributing to a more vibrant and responsive sector. Train Derailment on Angola’s Lobito Corridor Disrupts Copper and Sulfur Transport A train derailment on Angola’s Lobito Corridor has disrupted the transportation of key commodities, including copper concentrates, the railway operator reported on Today. The Lobito Corridor is a crucial trade route connecting the mineral-rich Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with Angola’s Lobito port on the Atlantic Ocean. This corridor holds strategic importance for the United States and the European Union, both of which are seeking greater access to the minerals essential for the global shift to cleaner energy technologies. The derailment occurred on Thursday between the Cavimbe and Cangumbe stations and involved a train carrying sulfur, according to a statement from Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR). Fortunately, no casualties were reported. The company announced that repairs to the 400 meters of damaged track are expected to be completed within four days. “LAR will prioritize passenger and fuel trains, with international sulfur and copper trains resuming thereafter,” the statement added. LAR, a joint venture supported by global commodities trader Trafigura, Portuguese construction group Mota-Engil, and railway operator Vecturis, was awarded a 30-year concession in 2022 to operate the 1,300-kilometer rail network.

The U.S. continues to grow its footprint in supporting critical minerals projects in like-minded nations. Meteoric Resources and Australian Strategic Materials (ASM) received letters of interest from the Export-Import Bank of the United States for up to US$600M in debt funding.
