Common Clichés in Occupational Health and Safety. The phrase “safety first” is one we have all heard and seen, whether in our organizations or in our daily lives. It has been in use for over a century around the world. Recently, there has been a movement to shift from “safety first” to “safety always.” The rationale behind this change is that occupational safety and health (OSH) professionals have faced challenges in implementing effective safety measures. For instance, workers often adopt a mindset where they only prioritize safety at the beginning of their tasks, neglecting it as they progress. This behavior can be attributed to the implication of the phrase “safety first,” which suggests that safety is a one-time priority rather than a continuous commitment. In the video below,Keith Mercurio argues about the impact of cliché phrases in OSH, as they tend to create old reactions instead of new thinking. It's important to recognize the limitations of phrases like “safety first” and “safety always” and others. While they may sound motivational, they can fail to make a different. Gaining New Perspectives on OHSEToday, I had the opportunity to deepen my understanding of Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment (OHSE) through an engaging socialization event hosted by our company. The session kicked off with a quiz that not only tested our knowledge but also added a fun and interactive element to our learning experience. Having studied some of these topics in college, I was able to complete the quiz effortlessly.The highlight of the event was the comprehensive presentation on OHSE regulations. We delved into essential safety measures, including the importance of proper attire in the factory area, the necessity of supervision or certification when operating specialized machinery, and the protocols for accident reporting. Emphasis was also placed on maintaining a safe and clean environment, alongside effective waste management practices categorizing waste as toxic (EEE), domestic, and residual.I am grateful for the chance to participate and provide feedback on our workspace. It's important that we reinforce these rules among all personnel and ensure that medical aid is readily available for our workers. Some can be common across companies like “always de-energize equipment before working on it”, while others may be very specific to a particular company and its operations. Historically, they have often been implemented with some form of “zero tolerance” policy that says something like “if you violate these rules you will be disciplined, up to and including termination”.Some people say cardinal rules are critical to strong safety performance, while others say “get rid of them”.
