Great event at submarine base Kings Bay here in GA! How so? Glad you asked... RecruitMilitary inaugural event saw some great traffic for a relatively small area. But the connections being made over the four hours were amazing to watch. A few direct hire opportunities, multiple on-site interviews, and a LOT of happy recruiters left with a list of call backs. I enjoyed seeing a large number of first amd second term Sailors and Marines (mostly) walk in hesitant, unsure of what to expect, much less how to even start a conversation. My advice to them stayed simple: 1. I've done these events for 2 years, amd STILL meet companies I dod not know or had heard of. So, ask! Let them tell you about themselves. 2. Be authentic! There's no need to try and "sell" yourself as anything you are not. While it makes sense to practice an introduction speech, don't become robotic about it. Enjoy simply having the conversation. 3. Network with purpose! Connect, converse, and follow up! Recruiters talk to other recruiters. 4. Stop at every booth. Opportunities constantly cone from places people never expected them too. Don't assume you know what any company is hiring for. It's like saying "no" for them. Having so many in-person and virtual events offers a lot of opportunities for connection and employment. In 2011 I was deployed to Afghanistan with a #MARSOC Special Operations Task Force. I had finally made it into the organization I had my sights set on for years, and this was my second deployment with them. Towards the back end of this tour, I got a call from the organization's Intel Chief Scott H. Stalker and I thought I was gonna get tapped to work up and take out a Direct Support Team, which at that time was the pinnacle of what we could do as intel operators. I was wrong. Scott asked me to build out and professionalize the training program for intelligence Marines entering the command. While I still believe "intel is intel, you just account for mission and resources", we were deploying leaner teams, asking our intel Marines to do even more with even less than our conventional brothers and sisters, and required to understand ALL intel disciplines at a level that enabled us to synchronize and execute complex collection and analysis strategies on the fly. In short, this was a huge ask and one that changed the trajectory of the rest of my career. When I got back to the States, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work. Some incredibly talented intel Marines who had been at the command for years before me already identified that we needed some training, and had built a foundation for me to run with. With some incredible teammates like Tyler Lampe, Kyle Gantt, and Jesse Jordan we took concepts and built out the Multi-Discipline Intelligence Operator Course to certify Special Operations Intelligence Marines, essentially turning "hip pocket training" into an approved program of instruction certifying Marines to serve across the spectrum of SOF missions. What I didn't know at the time was just how much work would be done to build a true community. Tons of great Marines came after me, but Sean Basile, Dan Nokes, and Trevor Hairston took the "SOCS Community" to a whole new level. I have received lots of meaningful going away gifts or plaques throughout my career, but this SOCS Card with my serial number ("OG" in the line 😎) will have a permanent home on my wall. This will remind me not only of the incredible community that I am part of but also how some of the most rewarding assignments are those where you are asked to do something you may not have picked for yourself. #militarytransition #specialoperations #marinespecialoperations #MDIOC #SOCS #intelligence #raiders #teammates

In my tech career, I’ve often felt like a Navy SEAL… Finding the right match between your career stage and your employer's growth phase is key to your professional development. So how do you know what’s right for you? I’ve found the military branch analogy helpful: 1. Early stage - the Navy SEALs Role & responsibilities: ↳ Tackle broad objectives, operate independently, adapt quickly to challenges, and achieve breakthroughs with minimal oversight. Benefits: ↳ Presents high risks but high rewards, fostering independence and quick thinking. 2. Growth stage - the Marines Role & responsibilities: ↳ Part of a structured team with established processes, yet flexible enough to independently tackle new challenges Benefits: ↳ A balanced environment offering both flexibility and structure, suitable for various career stages. 3. Maturity stage - the Army Role & responsibilities: ↳ Embedded in robust processes and a well-defined hierarchy, focusing on top-down directives and gradual change for stability and consistency. Instead, focus on mastering the basics in a supportive environment, and you'll soon be equipped to tackle more complex challenges - like being airdropped behind enemy lines.
