I have been working in and around AV policy for over a decade. It is truly amazing to see how much this industry has grown and changed in that time. We are already seeing the benefits to roadway safety, the transformation of mobility and easing supply chains. At AVIA, we have been working hard on a new framework of federal policy recommendations. This framework takes a fresh approach to federal policymaking in the space and we are very excited to announce it-- and I am very excited to work to realize the benefits of AVs through sound policymaking. Today is a big day as the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association releases "Securing American Leadership in Autonomous Vehicles." 🎆 This is a comprehensive roadmap for American leadership in autonomous vehicles. The proposal delivers specific action items for Congress and the Department of Transportation. Autonomous vehicles will continue to revolutionize road safety, enhance accessibility, deliver supply chain resiliency, and create American jobs. But the AV industry needs federal partners to put in place a common sense regulatory framework that supports growth and investment. AVIA is looking forward to engaging deeply on this proposal in the coming days and weeks.

Highlighting AVIA's federal policy framework proposals for autonomous vehicles that, if enacted, will accelerate the deployment of safe, sustainable, and flexible autonomous mobility solutions – delivering transformative benefits to communities across the U.S.

Improved road safety, economic growth, tech innovation, and continued American leadership in AVs — the right national framework for AV regulations, like the one laid out today by the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association, can make all of this possible. Mauricio E. Peña, Ph.D., Waymo's chief safety officer: “Waymo strongly supports AVIA’s comprehensive proposal of modern, commonsense federal rules that would bring uniformity, efficiency, and additional safety to the deployment of autonomous vehicles. If implemented, AVIA’s recommended framework would ensure all Americans can safely experience fully autonomous transportation, and cement U.S. leadership in the development and deployment of autonomous vehicles.” It is time for the federal government to start writing new regulations for AVs. We need meaningful and reasonable national AV rules that ensure all AVs meet a required baseline of safety and which provide the regulatory certainty needed for continued U.S. investment and innovation. Harmonizing AV regulation nationally via robust federal rules will also reduce the burden on local and state governments while ensuring all American consumers are protected by the same regulations. And it will help us avoid letting other countries set the rules for AV development. I look forward to working with both the new Congress and the incoming Administration to advance these goals, and I am optimistic they will not let this opportunity slip away.

Which will happen first - a national mileage-based fee or fully connected and autonomous vehicles? Both were explored in NC Go’s panel at the NCDOT Transportation Summit. Vermont DOT’s Michele Boomhower, Oregon DOT and RUC America’s Randal Thomas, and Cruise’s Henry L. Greenidge, Esq. talked about the wave of states exploring, piloting, and implementing mileage-based fees and the development and deployment CAVs.

As noted in the succent and well presented Bloomberg article by Keith Laing, when the U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg "[connects] his agency’s oversight of autonomous vehicles to convincing Americans to be as concerned about roadway injuries and deaths as they are about aviation safety"; it seems to beg the question that autonomous vehicles are less safe than those driven by (often distracted) humans. Our U.S. consumer data shows that in 2023, 34.8% of American drivers literally "hate" the idea of autonomous vehicles with an additional 28.4% negatively disposed. In 2024, this rejection increased to 38.1% and 28.6% respectively. Only 6% of drivers in 2024 "Love" the idea of owning/riding in an autonomous vehicle; the greatest proportion of those being #Tesla drivers where the brand has had an impact on the negative impressions that seem to prevail. Based on the data we (and others) have and review, systems such as Waymo are not just a little safer than human drivers, but significantly so. This is the message that those like Buttigieg should be sharing with Americans and policy makers to help reach the goal of zero deaths. #autonomousvehicles #consumerpsychology #transportation https://lnkd.in/g-C-G_KT
