Impressive engineering for a world record elevator. The Bailong Elevator, located in Zhangjiajie, China, is a glass elevator embedded in a cliffside. Standing at 326 meters, it holds the record as the world's highest outdoor elevator. Offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, it’s an extraordinary feat of engineering and a popular tourist attraction. This marvel features a triple-tower structure anchored to the cliff. Its construction involved drilling through the quartz sandstone cliff and securing the towers with steel supports. The elevator's transparent walls provide panoramic views as it ascends at a speed of 3 meters per second. With a capacity of 50 people per cabin, it efficiently transports visitors to the summit, showcasing the integration of cutting-edge technology with the natural landscape. This is unquestionably a marvel of engineering but, just as the elevator is high, the environmental price paid to realise this work is also very high. Was it worth it? Shanghai World Financial Center: more than a skyscraper The Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC), located in the Pudong district of Shanghai, is a masterpiece of modern engineering and architecture. Inaugurated in 2008, the tower reaches a height of 492 meters, making it one of the tallest buildings in the world. Experts have clarified that the mould issues at Singapore's Gaia building, Asia's largest mass timber structure, are not due to the timber itself but rather a result of condensation and rain exposure. The building, constructed with Austrian spruce, has seen mould growth primarily on air-conditioning grilles and surfaces where humid air meets cooler indoor temperatures. This emphasizes the importance of proper maintenance in tropical environments, where even treated materials can face such challenges. NTU is addressing the issue with enhanced cleaning and maintenance protocols to ensure the building remains a sustainable landmark. A striking red brick facade, a picturesque location, and a practical, functional design. If you live in Brisbane, chances are you will recognise this important building. Not just because of its reputation as a premier entertainment venue that hosts events, weddings, functions, and performing arts, but also because of its historical significance in helping power our tram system. The Brisbane Powerhouse in New Farm is a testament to our state’s journey towards modernisation. Originally constructed in stages between 1928 and 1940, it was designed by Roy Rusden Ogg, the architect for the Brisbane City Council’s Tramways Department. Brisbane’s tramway system was once the biggest in the southern hemisphere, so powering this network was no easy feat. But the Brisbane Powerhouse did more than just that—it helped provide power and lighting for the suburbs of Toowong, Ithaca, and Yeerongpilly. Today, as we further develop and build out important energy infrastructure that modernises our grid and creates a cleaner, brighter future, I’m reminded of buildings like this that transcend time and capture the charm, ambition, and enterprising nature of Queenslanders. Our renewable energy transformation taps into much of that same energy—and just like the Powerhouse, it’s going to have a lasting impact on our energy landscape. Department of Energy and Climate

Nordic real estate investor, Nrep, has announced the construction of a six-storey timber residential building in Nordhavn (North Harbour), Copenhagen’s new sustainable harbourside city district. The 13 100m2 development will boast the lowest ever carbon emissions for a building over four floors in Denmark due to its wooden construction. Designed by Henning Larsen, the building will comprise 115 apartments and 2 commercial spaces with anticipated occupation by mid-2026. The Nordhavn development will have a total of 5kg of CO2 per sqm, well below the new strict requirement. During its lifespan, the timber construction will bind a large amount of CO2 which will be released again at the theoretical burning of the materials after 50 years. There is an emphasis on the design of the building so that it can be easily disassembled and recycled should it be demolished.
