To understand how Chinese industries develop China Society of Automotive Engineers (China-SAE) can serve as one example. SAE was founded in 1963 and with 39 branches, tens of thousands of individual members and over a thousand of corporate members, it has become a significant force in the development of China’s automotive industry; focusing on the below six areas:
- Promote scientific and technical progress in the automotive industry
- Train automotive talents
- Push forward technical exchanges between domestic and international
automotive industries
- Popularize the knowledge of automotive industry
- Spread the culture of automotive industry
- Build a home for scientists and engineers
As a huge and dynamic network of companies and individuals from all parts of society it disseminates ideas and concepts at amazing speed and efficiency. Yes, the Chinese government sets industrial goals and targets often supported with massive funds, but at the end of the day, without vast voluntary networks like SAE little concrete would happen.

Happy to attend the Reuters Events: Automotive Europe 2024 in Munich with interesting inputs from different speakers.
- Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares: We need stable framework conditions, political objectives should not be constantly questioned. And protectionism is not the answer to Chinese competition. It leads to more inflation in the domestic markets and weak exports.
- Volkswagen’s Group Board Member for Technology Thomas Schmall was also clear: A "Master Plan" is now needed in Europe. The USA had made a decisive strategic step with the Inflation Reduction Act, whereas China is following its own strategy as well. Something similar is lacking in Europe. There are still two to three years to react.
- In the panel "How is Government Regulation changing the Automotive Industry Landscape?" I underlined this message. Our current problem is not the CO2 target for 2035, but instead we need flexibility, a robust enabling framework and suitable funding conditions to achieve this goal.
Understanding the rise of China's OEMs: Key players, global ties, and future potential

For those who missed the PM’s insightful speech at SEMICON SEA yesterday, you can catch it here. This is a historic moment for MITI, and for Malaysia as we strategical, systematically and strongly position ourselves to attract RM500b of investments into this sector, along with other enhancing enabling factors such as talent and SME capacity in the industry’s ecosystem.
The global semiconductor industry is forecast to grow into a USD1 trillion industry by this decade’s end. Fast-growing demand for a diverse range of disruptive technologies and emerging applications – from AI, autonomous and electric vehicles, and high-performance computing to 6G and autonomous machines – will fuel this historic expansion. To support anticipated industry growth, 109 new fabs are expected to come online between 2022 and 2026, according to the SEMI World Fab Forecast. Fully 89 of these fabs have already either begun operation, equipping or construction. More fabs will be needed through the end of the decade to support burgeoning demand for chips.
This is an exciting space to be in and MITI, along with key agencies such as MIDA, MATRADE and CREST are right at the heart of it! 👏🏼
