Design 1 Project 2021 Project Title: Cliffside Sea Chalet Location: Coastal Cliffside Site Area: 600 sqm Project Description: This project involves designing a luxurious chalet perched on a dramatic cliff overlooking the sea. As my first architectural endeavor in Design 1, the aim is to create a harmonious blend of modern aesthetics with the natural beauty of the coastal environment. The chalet is envisioned as a serene retreat that maximizes the breathtaking views of the sea and the rugged cliff. The design focuses on seamless integration with the natural landscape while ensuring structural stability on the challenging cliffside terrain.

On Ilha de Fernando de Noronha, Pernambocu, Brazil, a modularly constructed boutique hotel, encourages visitors to immerse themselves into the surrounding nature. Comprised of a locally sourced, natural stone base, and with a genetically modified accoya wood facade, the project was made to blend within its surroundings. The slatted wood panels, are more weather resistant and durable than traditional natural native woods which designers hope will increase their longevity. Architects and builders of the project, looked to minimize the buildings impact and footprint as much as possible. By assembling the project offsite and bringing it in later to be placed, there was minimal disturbance to the surrounding nature and allowed for the natural environment to fill in right up to the property. Increasing advancements in the hospitality sector, and renewed consciousness towards the built environments impacts on the natural environment, is an important part of the future of sustainability. The more successful projects that can showcase this, the more it will be implemented globally. The design depicted in this image is of a multi-tiered, mixed-use development that harmoniously integrates with its waterfront setting. The undulating form of the buildings takes inspiration from natural topography, resembling hills or waves, which helps to blend the structure into the landscape. The terraces are richly adorned with trees and plants, reinforcing the connection to nature and potentially offering residents and users an immersive natural environment within an urban context. The organic, layered structure of the building promotes the idea of vertical living, with residential, commercial, and possibly recreational spaces stacked in a way that encourages community interaction and accessibility. The use of natural materials, like wood, for the façade and the inclusion of abundant vegetation suggests a focus on sustainability and ecological design. At the base, there are more open, communal spaces that seem to extend into the waterfront, inviting public engagement and offering leisure activities, which enhances the site's vibrancy. This concept appears to prioritize not only the aesthetic appeal but also the functional and ecological aspects, aiming to create a living, breathing building that serves as a habitat for both humans and local flora and fauna.

In Aldea Zamá neighborhood of Riviera Maya, located within the city of Tulum, Quintana Roo state, Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico, Sordo Madaleno designed 38 apartments that aspire to blend naturally within their environment. With the natural environment at the forefront of their plans, the developers raised the structures off the ground to reduce the impact on the site. Raising the structure also allows for the passage of water underneath the structures if needed during large storms. The designers used locally sourced materials for the finishes, reducing the buildings carbon footprint and construction waste at the same time. Strategic placement of the units and their windows and doors, allowed the designers to emphasize natural sunlight throughout the interior spaces and also direct air flow throughout the site, which helps regulate temperatures. The designers also worked to help regulate temperatures by creating screens of natural material across the rooftops of the buildings, this provides shade to reduce solar gain on the residences. A combination of gardens, terraces, courtyards and patios are scattered throughout the site, offering residents a stronger connection to the natural environment, while also further regulating temperatures. Communal public spaces allow for residents to build a stronger sense of community and belonging, which is important for multi-family developments in the short and long term. With multi-family housing becoming a such a lucrative choice for developers, it’s important that we are cognizant of the strain that these larger projects can have on our natural environment. By designing projects that blend within our natural environment, using locally sourced and natural materials, and have minimal impact on sensitive sites, we can build a more sustainable world. This design is a striking architectural statement, with a bold use of curves and interconnecting elements that create a sense of continuity between the towers. The hanging swimming pool acts as a stunning centerpiece, while the verdant gardens add a refreshing natural element to the high-rise structure. The rose gold accents on the edges of the towers provide a luxurious touch against the more muted tones of the building, and the overall form is both futuristic and harmonious with the urban landscape. In terms of sustainability, the design likely promotes natural light and air flow, and the green spaces could contribute to improved air quality. Overall, this complex would likely rate highly for its visionary design, potential for enhancing the urban environment, and architectural innovation. It could become an iconic landmark for Toronto, representing a new era of skyscraper design.

When we first approached this site in Brent, our research uncovered that all buildings on this piece of land has taken the form of a warehouse for over 100 years. This led us to question: Rather than oppose, how could we best utilise this historic form for living? The result? Nine dwellings and a new commercial unit incorporated into a low-slung building that complements the rich, mixed character of the area. Light is drawn into the residences via a number of courtyards, rooflights and clerestory windows. Inside, traditional room arrangements are flipped upside down, with raised terraces that extend straight out of the living rooms. The internal and external walls align which dissolves the barriers inside and outside, creating a seamless spatial experience. A green roof adds to the sensation of living within a landscape while at the same time privacy is retained for all the occupants. This design concept is an imaginative fusion of a modern skyscraper with cubist influences, where each segment represents a different Canadian landmark or natural wonder, seamlessly integrated into a singular structure. Glass and green spaces are used to create a sense of openness and continuity with nature. The cascading waterfalls add a dynamic element, symbolizing the flow of life and energy, while paying homage to the majestic Niagara Falls. Evaluating this concept, it's an ambitious blend of architecture and nature, aiming to create a landmark that is both a functional space and an ode to Canada's rich heritage and natural beauty. It's a bold, intricate design that challenges conventional building forms and could become an iconic structure reflecting the country's identity and diversity.

This is what it takes to respond to the #climateemergency and build beyond regulations: thirty site visits, one appeal, 134 issues of information, countless emails, a fantastic client, a steep learning curve and a lot of professional fun. This project is a huge achievement for the brilliant team at Collective Works, and was only possible with an ambitious and collaborative consultant, contractor and client team. The Dezeen article shows the glossy pictures, and we will share more technical information as we continue to monitor performance. As we have been pushing for #RIBA2030 and #netzero for years, this first completed #deepretrofit project is a reason to celebrate. A small (but important) step for the London housing stock, and a giant leap for us.
