How can we create a collaborative & inclusive learning space for change makers from different countries and disciplines❓ How can we communicate to foster understanding, and ultimately build a community of activists❓ 📣 The Humanity in Action team embraced this challenge and over the past two days conducted International Kick-off Days for Fellowship programs in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, and Sarajevo. Young leaders from 15 countries, with diverse backgrounds, recruited through 6 offices, will explore human rights challenges through the lens of history and cross-cultural dialogue. 📌 Our Fellowships aim to achieve Humanity in Action's goals: to educate, connect, and inspire future leaders to strengthen democracy, protect human rights, advance social equity, and pursue justice. Our vision is to build pluralistic societies that embrace differences and negotiate their boundaries through constructive political, social, and personal dialogue and relationships. During the first days, we introduced newcomers to our organization and community. Our alumni shared their experiences from their programs, and we discussed current challenges facing democracies. 🙌 We engaged in collaborative storytelling and reflected on our preferred communication styles, considering how to find common ground with people who communicate differently from us. To guide our work together, we reflected on the following questions from Ibo Patel, a U.S. educator focused on pluralism and positive communication: How do you listen so someone else feels heard, not just as a pause between making your own points ❓ How do you tell a story that builds a relationship ❓ How do you ask a question that opens someone up rather than shuts them down ❓ How do you facilitate a dialogue where everyone leaves with a greater understanding of the situation, rather than a heightened suspicion of one another❓ How do you create a space that feels like a potluck supper rather than a melting pot or battlefield—a space where diverse people are invited to bring their best dish to the table, where delicious combinations are created and enriching conversations are had❓ ✨ Metaphorically, Humanity in Action hosted a POTLUCK, hoping that its Fellows would bring their best dishes and that through the diversity of participants and their opinions, these joint explorations will be truly enriching. #CrossCulturalDialogue #DiversityAndInclusion #HumanityInAction

How is the younger generation different from the older generation? In many ways, they bring fresh perspectives, technological savviness, and a strong sense of social responsibility. However, this generation gap can sometimes create misunderstandings and misalignments within companies. We need to align the innovative ideas of the younger generation with the wisdom and experience of the older generation. By doing so, we can create a more cohesive and dynamic work environment. Let’s bridge not only cultures and borders but generations as well. Happy International Youth Day!

I’m looking forward to presenting at The Forum’s 20th Annual Conference with colleagues Dr. Eduardo Contreras Jr., Lily Lopez-McGee, PhD, and Neal McKinney, Ph.D. where we will be “Addressing the Pervasive Legacy of White Supremacy in Education Abroad.” Please join us! SESSION DETAILS: Date: Friday, March 22 Time: 10:45am-12:00pm Description: The continued disproportionality of racial representation in education abroad jobs, as well as lower study abroad participation rates for racially underrepresented students, compel us to examine more closely the legacy of white supremacy and the persistence of institutional racism as they relate to education abroad and U.S. higher education more broadly. In this panel presentation, equity and inclusion scholar-practitioners discuss white supremacy as a global phenomenon, its continued presence in and impact on education abroad, and how to translate knowledge to action to address the racial, ethnic, and class inequities that persist in education abroad research and practice. We hope to see you there. #forum2024 #educationabroad #diversitymatters
