Goed te Beaulieu, Waregem With a lot of joy, we have worked on the competition for the renovation of a monumental farmstead into a care facility. Unfortunately not a win, but we are still proud of the process and the results. In our plan, the current hay shed of the monumental farmstead is transformed into a assisted living group. The existing open facade will be filled in with a framework of wood and hemp insulation. The characteristic green colour of the site is reused for special elements, like entrances, railings and gutters. The characteristics of the old barn, with its big sliding doors, high ceiling and existing mezzanines, make it a perfect space for the touristic café of the care facility. The view from the inner court of the farmstead to the hinterlands becomes unobstructed by opening the sliding doors. Outdoor vertical greening: When working with plants, think about your greening goal of the project! Plants need time to grow. 🌱 There are species which can climb up very high and some stay low. 🌿 Most important is to give the plants enough soil volume / room for the roots. In Austria you can find more details in the standards ÖNORM L1136. This facade greening is located in Vienna's city centre at Zedlitzhalle (1010), instructed by Wiener Netze GmbH! 😎 It was planned by Kräftner Landschaftsarchitektur and Rataplan Architektur with the workmanship of Garten- und Landschaftsbau #Neuland 🌱 The project was completed in 2019. To reach 20 metres of hight, Wisteria sinensis, a very fast and high growing plant is used. You can see how it has been growing the last 5 years. 🌿 #verticalgreening #greenwall #facades #architecture #plants #nbs #city #planning #bauwerksbegrünung #fassadebegrünung #stadtplanung #grünstattgrau GRÜNSTATTGRAU

A sad reality of these times is that the most beautiful architectural projects are left to look forlorn with failures in their landscaping projects. So frequently dead and unhealthy plants are found, often just after 3-4 years. Grange Growing Solutions is here to make sure that the right soil is being used for landscaping projects, meaning growth can thrive, keeping the facade verdant and vibrant! 🔗 Click the link below to learn more about Grange Growing Solutions https://lnkd.in/gtYUp6F8

Breathing new life into four historic warehouses, The Waterman is a testament to what’s possible with thoughtful design and innovation. Working with BGO and Fathom we united four Victorian warehouses, overcoming challenges like a loadbearing masonry structure, varying floor levels, and Conservation Area requirements, to deliver a seamless 70,000 sq ft workspace. Key to the project was retaining the building’s heritage while reimagining it for modern use. By repurposing 5,000 bricks, incorporating low-carbon materials, and reusing three tonnes of glass for terrazzo countertops, we significantly reduced the carbon footprint while respecting its history. The addition of two new levels, including a rooftop terrace with panoramic views, provides the perfect balance of functionality and aesthetic charm. Natural ventilation, smart lighting, and biophilic touches like wildflower habitats ensure the building is innovative and inviting. We are excited to share more about this landmark project over the coming months. #Ambit #TheWaterman

den Bell Antwerp, from grey courtyard to urban oasis OMGEVING https://lnkd.in/gueQ69Uc Stad Antwerpen The design transforms the triangular central courtyard into a green urban oasis. As much as 31% of greenery will be added and hard surface on the underground car park will be depaved. It creates space for nature and biodiversity and increases the quality of life. In addition, new trees (7), shrubs (28), perennials (25.000), bulbous and tuber plants (80.000) and climbing plants (235) are added. A seven-meter-high pergola, overgrown with climbers, provides shade. Thanks to the tree slabs between the plants, you can playfully experience the new nature. Also, the tree trunk posts at different heights can be used for hopping, playing or sitting. The landscape works started on 10 January 2024 and will be completed before the end of 2024. This article shows the recent construction progress.

I am currently visiting Haarlem, the Netherlands. One of my favourite buildings is this beautiful cottage, located in the Vijfhoek neighbourhood. It was built ~350 years ago, seems to be a functional dwelling, and with ongoing maintenance, it should last for centuries more. My question is, do you find this home beautiful? And, would you live there? For me it's yes and yes! When Vitruvius, the Roman military architect, wrote De Architectura, he said that buildings must have Firmitas (built to last), Utilitas (must be useful), and Venustas (must be beautiful). These simple principles (in my view) were definitely applied to this charming home. I find that many modern buildings forget these basic Vitruvian principles, I.E. the design lacking a mindset to last graciously and usefully for say 500+ years. It's understandable. The current demands for seemingly endless code and regulatory compliance, building for right now's utilisation and technology, cost minimisation, short-term profit maximisation, and to maximum allowable volumes/ areas seems to often result in today's buildings that won't always be useful, won't last and lack enduring beauty. It would be hard to argue that this 350 year old building isn't/ wasn't built sustainably. This building will have needed ongoing maintenance, periodic rejuvenation and occasional renovation to adapt over the centuries. However, it stands the test of time. My call out is: If you really want to show off your "green" kahunas, build buildings that last and will still be loved in 500 years. Thank you for your time. #sustainability #architecture #green #building #500years #Haarlem #Vitruvius

We are developing an urban landscape draft with the goal of harmoniously blending modern elements while honoring local cultural values, creating a modern and sustainable city. This design focuses on maintaining a balance between green spaces and architecture, using natural materials such as wood, stone, and bamboo to create a connection with the surrounding environment. Terraced pools, Koi ponds, and winding pathways are skillfully integrated to naturally create communal and private spaces. The landscape is enriched with diverse types of greenery, improving the living environment and fostering a close connection with nature. Typology: Masterplan Size: 51.000 m2

DUAL OCCUPANCY DEVELOPMENT 🏠 🏠 The Site📍 62 Cummins Road, Brighton The Task 📝 The proposal sought to develop the site with high quality and responsive double-storey dual occupancy dwellings and demolish the existing dwellings. Double garages were provided for both units. The Outcome 💯 The proposal reviewed an approval from Council as the Secluded Private Open Space requirements were met with both units having roof decking and backyards and balconies. The high quality and responsive design is well located on a corner site. The proposal increases the landscape value of the site and the area through the planting of new trees, shrubs varying in size and shape complimenting with the built environment.

In Kurdějov, Brěclov District, South Moravian Region, Czech Republic, a winery nestled within the hills of the region, placed sustainability at the heart of its design. With a perforated, curved green roof, the structure aspired to blend within its surroundings. Over 150 native trees and shrubs have been planted on site and within the site too, enhancing the regions biodiversity. The use of locally sourced, native oak and acacia wood throughout the interior spaces, gives the interiors a strong connection to the outdoors, while also lowering the project embodied carbon footprint. Careful attention was paid to the energy usage throughout the property. Strategically placed oak wood overhangs over the windows reduces the thermal absorption within the facility in the summer months. The curvature of the roof allows for rainwater harvesting which is reused for the extensive gardens, and an air to water heat pump system heats the interiors of the spaces throughout the winter months. Projects such as these, show the capabilities of incorporating multiple aspects of sustainable building techniques that can all be blended together, into one seamless comprehensive space.
