Dear Colleagues, A recent publication in Medical Science Monitor sheds light on the cognitive impairment associated with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD/MASLD). This common chronic liver condition not only affects liver function but also has extrahepatic manifestations, including cognitive decline. Positioned between normal aging and dementia, cognitive impairment poses a significant challenge for individuals at risk of progressing to liver fibrosis. The study highlights compromised executive function and a global decline in cognitive capabilities in MAFLD/MASLD patients. Factors such as insulin resistance, lipotoxicity, and systemic inflammation contribute to this cognitive impairment. Understanding these links between hepatic health and cognitive function is crucial. The complete report is now available at the Medical Science Monitor webpage. | https://lnkd.in/ddwkgMiV

In illness medicine, we focus on the organs. In #healthoptimization medicine, we focus on one unit of selection lower and focus on the holo-organism, a population of cells (human and non-human) + metabolites that make us, "us." This is called the #holobiont. #HOMeHOPe is the first multi-omics specialty to define and deliver a standard of care for health, not disease. Disease is managed and health is optimized using a foundational approach that is entirely different from illness medicine. To start on your journey towards becoming a HOMeHOPe practitioner, #ClinicalMetabolomics is the foundational module, while #EvolutionaryMedicine is the true tour de force that underpins all of the modules of the HOMeHOPe Essential Certification. ➡️ Read more about clinical metabolomics in our blog article here: https://lnkd.in/gSN_qYfY ➡️ Read more about evolutionary medicine in our blog article here: https://lnkd.in/gy7Myeba ➡️ Enroll in the Clinical Metabolomics Bundle here: https://lnkd.in/drHwqiwb ➡️ Enroll in the Evolutionary Medicine module here: https://lnkd.in/gixwtcNA

Reboot Communications genomics-first approach can significantly enhance the diagnosis of rare diseases by identifying new genes associated with these conditions. Analyzing genomes from over 2,000 families revealed more than 270 new disease-related genes, mostly recessive. This method requires both parents to carry a copy of the gene for a disease to manifest, offering a powerful tool for early and accurate diagnosis. Molecular You
Congratulations to Drs. Gregory Costain and Rashma Amin who have received grants through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research | Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada #RareDisease Research Initiative. This funding will drive #SKResearch that will help improve the diagnosis and monitoring of rare health conditions in Canada. Dr. Gregory Costain is a Scientist in the Genetics & Genome Biology program and Staff Physician in the Division of Clinical and Metabolic Genetics. His project, which will conduct a randomised clinical trial of a genomics-first approach to rare disease diagnosis in collaboration with the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), was awarded $1.375 million over three years as a winner of the Improving Diagnosis for Rare Disease Patients Team Grant. Dr. Reshma Amin is a Senior Associate Scientist in the Child Health Evaluative Sciences program, Director of Sleep Medicine and Long-term Ventilation and Staff Respirologist. Her project, which was awarded $1.6 million over four years as part of the Improving Health and Administrative Data and Monitoring for Rare Diseases Team Grant, seeks to establish a national framework for integrating patient reporting outcomes, health-care utilization and costs for neuromuscular disease. Nutritional Therapists, Functional Medicine Doctors, Scientists, you are welcome to join me for a free webinar TOMORROW on Cognitive Health- A Functional Medicine Approach. This is where decades of research is translated into the know-how to help individuals keep their brain healthy and prevent or reverse cognitive decline and early Alzheimer's Disease. I'm very excited to speak on this topic, as I completed my PhD on Alzheimer's disease over 20 years ago, and have seen the field develop with incredible advances over a few decades. What is most exciting is that the individualised nutrition and lifestyle approach, which underpins the way we work in functional medicine, has been used in a large-scale clinical trial setup, with fenomenal results.
