🌟 This year's Women's History Month theme is "Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion." 1.1M women now work in the construction industry in the United States, which accounts for around 1 in 10 employees in the industry. The number of women-owned construction firms has grown by more than 84% since 2007. On top of that, there is a growing emphasis on promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education among young women to encourage their participation in construction-related fields. At Asa Carlton, we firmly believe that fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion is not just the right thing to do, but also the key to building a successful and thriving workplace. Coforma is closed on Juneteenth to commemorate the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day marks the end of slavery in the United States, but those interim years remind us that the journey toward true equity is ongoing and continues even today. At Coforma, we take access to equity to heart. One way we do this is through our approach to forming diverse design research teams that prioritize cultural sensitivity, competency, and responsiveness to employ inclusive methods that meet participants where they are. I was so pleased to learn today that Jennifer Castenson will be leading a couple of panel discussions at the LBM Strategies Conference this year. The event is Oct. 11-13 in Charlotte, NC. The first day of the event really focuses on empowering women to succeed in the world of building materials…and beyond. On day one of the event Jennifer leads a discussion on Closing the Gap: Attracting Women to Your Workplace. With women representing more than 50% of the overall population, yet comprising less than 15% of the LBM workforce; this panel of female leaders will discuss how to improve these numbers by addressing pay gaps, discussing where and when gender seems to matter, how to tackle discrimination and why it’s more important to put values around performance rather than gender. That same day, Christi Powell will be speaking about the significance of community, connection, and commitment for women in the construction and building materials industry in her presentation; “Building Success for Women in Industry…Together!” She will show you how to foster meaningful connections through mentorship programs and networking events, and the importance of continuous learning, by seeking and developing training opportunities, and how to stay updated on industry trends. I learned a new word in the last week: STEMinist A STEMinist is a feminist who supports women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). STEMinists believe that women should have equal opportunities and representation in STEM fields, which are typically male-dominated. They advocate for women in STEM fields, encouraging them to pursue work in these fields. I am proud to call myself a STEMinist!

Today, on Human Rights Day, we stand united in our commitment to upholding the fundamental rights and dignity of every individual. As an ex-school leader and now parent of not one - but two boys (& a girl)- I feel it’s important to get things ‘right’ for our young men as this benefits us all.
