On Friday I attended the Bmore Historic Unconference, held at the Baltimore Museum of Industry, and co-led a session on creating spaces for productive dialogue within organizations (thank you to my co-facilitators, Melanie Hood-Wilson and Andrea K. Jones!). The assembled group came up with great ideas about what it takes to discuss issues proactively. Here are ten of those ideas: 1. Have conversations proactively, before things get really bad 2. Practice having difficult conversations instead of avoiding difficult conversations  3. Engage with others as equals, regardless of organizational role 4. Hold difficult conversations in neutral spaces - ideally appealing spaces like green spaces / outdoors 5. Established a shared goal or shared understanding of the challenge being discussed 6. When you hear something that conflicts with your ideas, ask the other person to share more (“What makes you say that?”) 7. Be trauma informed (one useful resource: https://lnkd.in/e325tSdz) 8. Really listen to the other person, and don’t make assumptions 9. Train employees and leaders for soft-skills and relationship building  10. Understand the value of each individual, and that leader’s values may be different, and become embedded in the organization.
