This is an insightful and timely article. According to a recent analysis published by Cruchbase, based on data through May 2024, the amount of capital raised through Series A funding for biotechs is expected to rise above last year's total, but fewer companies are actually receiving the investments. The projected # of biotechs receiving Series A for FY2024 is projected to be ~20% lower than 2023 and ~40% lower than 2019 / 2020. With fewer companies receiving larger amounts of capital, there is a significant funding gap and a tremendous opportunity for organizations, like Blackbird Laboratories and the others mentioned in this article, to identify promising research, leverage their technical expertise to de-risk early development pitfalls and to accelerate the development of novel and valuable medicines. #Innovation #Entrepreneurship #Biotech
Over the past few months, Jun Axup, Amanda Cashin, PhD, Diana Joseph, Will Richardson and I have been teaming up to learn more abut a trend in life science that only seems to be growing: the emergence of new models to fund and accelerate life science innovation. These new innovation models are making a splash - including recent accouncements from Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network, Arc Institute, Convergent Research, Blackbird Laboratories, Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), Arcadia Science, Arena BioWorks. It's clear these new models are fueled by significant capital and exceptional talent, and are already making an impact in life science innovation! To start a conversation, we wrote a post to explore why funders and innovators are creating new life science innovation models and how the field might collectively help them (and others) grow. Please reach out if you'd like to join! A special thanks to all who informed this, including Cassie Crockett, Erin Rist, Matt Tremblay, Ph.D., Eddie Cherok, Amy Ryan, James Joseph, Samuel Arbesman, and Jason Kreisberg!

We were accepted to the Life Science Accelerator last week. Bodo Brückner and Markus Bühler, thank you for this! We will work on the improvements for our new service platform — 'Second Opinion Oncology'! It will allow cancer patients worldwide to get consultations from competent Western doctors more smoothly, easily, and affordably. → Improve our business model, pricing, and growth strategy. → Network with the stakeholders in the medical industry and investors. → Mentors will help in creating our new venture. Last week, we had a Pitch workshop (part 1) with Colin Bennett. He drew attention to important points in pitching and helped to look at our pitch from a different angle. Thanks, Colin! I liked the metaphor of an elephant and rider: The elephant is the emotional brain, and the rider is the logical one. It is a difficult job to control an elephant. It's too big. So, we should consider satisfying the 'elephant' of our listeners. Attract their attention, make them believe, and show care for them. We are eagerly looking forward to the next part of the pitch workshop and the exciting journey ahead with Life Science Accelerator! P.S. More about the Accelerator: https://lnkd.in/e6w4S-gC

I agree with Grace Cordovano, PhD, BCPA. It is GREAT, and I am excited, to see the inaugural CancerX Moonshot Accelerator having this impact during a period where capital has disapeared for most of the #disruptive #Immunooncology #biotechs. But make no mistake, there are many treatments that have shown substantial benefit to #patients with #cancer that can’t find funding. The acceptance rate for #moonshot should be closer to 20%. Not 12%!!! Many of the high risk/high reward ideas don’t even fit the moonshot metrics and are not being evaluated, let alone funded. This is something that should be fixed. As a related side note: Grateful to Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) for working to educate and bring #investors back to the #immunooncology space which has enormous potential and promise to increase not just response rates, but also CURE rates for patients with cancer. There is a goal of having 100 new immunooncology drugs approved by FDA IN THE NEXT DECADE. The clock is ticking! Are you a current or past American Cancer Society grantee? #DYK We’ve supported approximately 24,000 researchers across more than 1,400 institutions, helping to bring many new treatments, diagnostics, and interventions from the bench to the bedside. However, for every innovation that ACS-funded researchers have brought to market, countless others have fallen into the so-called “Valley of Death”, the gap between when basic research funding ends but investors are not yet ready to accept the risk of investing in the new technology or startup. Through the newly launched Collaborative Learning Community (CLC), the ACS Extramural Discovery Science team, together with the American Cancer Society’s venture capital arm BrightEdge, are helping researchers tackle this challenge head on by providing entrepreneurship-focused programming for scientists that have received grant funding from ACS. Interested researchers can access the CLC Virtual Platform by visiting BrightEdge Entrepreneurs Program and clicking "Enter Here" to create a new user profile: https://lnkd.in/gsWpEtCu. There is no cost to access this platform, which is available to all past and present ACS grantees. For questions about this program or other innovation programming, please contact BrightEdge.Innovation@cancer.org
