𝑻𝒂𝒙 𝑬𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒕: 𝑼𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑷𝑨𝒀𝑬 𝒊𝒏 𝑵𝒊𝒈𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒂 𝐀𝐝𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐨: Hey, have you ever wondered about that PAYE thing on our payslips? 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐮: Absolutely! It's called Pay As You Earn (PAYE), and it's a tax our employer deducts from our salaries. It's like Personal Income Tax under Section 81 of PITA. 𝐀𝐝𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐨: Ah, got it. So, what's this Consolidated Relief Allowance (CRA) I keep hearing about? 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐮: CRA is a relief on our gross income – it's the higher of N200,000 or 1% of gross income plus 20%, excluding Pension and NHF. 𝐀𝐝𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐨: Interesting. And the tax rates? 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐮: It's tiered. The first 300,000 is at 7%, the next 300,000 at 11%, and so on. The more you earn, the higher the rate. 𝐀𝐝𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐨: Seems complex. How do we know if our employer is doing this right? 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐮: Good question! Employers should remit the deducted PAYE tax by the 10th of the month after paying salaries. If not, they could face penalties. 𝐀𝐝𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐨: What about exemptions? 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐮: Employees earning N30,000 or below per month are exempt from PAYE. Minimum wage stuff. 𝐀𝐝𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐨: Nice breakdown! Anything I missed? 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐮: I think we covered it. What about you, any thoughts or experiences? 𝐀𝐝𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐨: Great convo! I'm reposting this for others to learn too. 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐮: Good idea! Let's spread the knowledge. Do well to repost and follow Adedayo Adebisi for more updates. #tax #pit #paye #annualreturns #nigeria #law #compliance #management

PAYE is an acronym for Pay as You Earn. Another name is Personal Income Tax. But please, let's get used to PAYE, we'll be using that a lot. So, every employer is obligated to remit a particular amount (based on some calculations) to the state government. Before now, all employees regardless of their earnings must pay something. Now the Government says employees earning 30,000 naira monthly and below won't be paying anything. This is good news for your employees as this will motivate them. Also, good news for employers who take the pain to pay for their staff. Yes! We have clients like that. Kudos to you. Do you know how to calculate PAYE? Good news,at least for now,to employed Kenyans. CoA has termed the housing levy unconstitutional. As accountants, how do we treat this in the current month's payroll? do we deduct or not? Will the iTax portal allow PAYE filing in Feb without section M? And how about tax credit for refunds? that would be nice
