Two weeks have now passed since the launch of Ovzon 3, and we are pleased to report that all is well with our satellite. Spacecraft separation from the second stage of the Falcon 9 rocket was followed by flawless deployments of both solar arrays and thrusters. Signal from the satellite was established as planned, which means we track the health of the satellite in real-time. The all-electric propulsion system is working as designed and Ovzon 3 is making its way towards geostationary orbit. The first week was dedicated to raising perigee above 1200 km altitude where atmospheric drag is not an issue. During the second week the Ovzon 3 reached above 1200km, and preliminary satellite platform In-Orbit-Test was successfully completed. It is now on track towards its GEO orbit position of 59.7E which it is planned to reach during the second quarter of this year. Today, 100,000 kg of cargo is carried by airplanes for every kg launched into orbit. Over 50 years this ratio has grown larger. Air cargo has increased exponentially while space launch stayed stagnant. On the eve of the 2nd #Starship launch, this ratio looks like it will change dramatically. Launch rates are skyrocketing due to #Starlink. Further drops in launch costs and satellite clusters like #Kuiper will keep increasing demand. The future holds even more. Launch is dominated by communication, research and military satellites. This increase in capacity and drop in costs will enable industry and resource development in space. The most abundant resource near earth is sunlight. By collecting sunlight in orbit and beaming it back to earth, clean, firm, renewable power can bring global prosperity. These samples will be exposed to radiation, extreme temperatures, a hard vacuum, and more. 🌌 Why Don't Artificial Satellites Collide? 🌌 🚀 Thousands in Orbit: Over 3,000 active satellites orbit Earth, with an equal number of inactive ones. There are also over 100 million tiny fragments called space debris (pieces of defunct satellites, spent rocket stages, and other fragments), some as small as 1 mm. 🌍 Vast Space: Near-Earth space is huge. One satellite occupies around 13,000 cubic kilometers (a unit of volume; 1 cubic kilometer = 1 billion cubic meters), simillar to the volume of Tsomoriri Lake(J&K). Despite this, the chances of a collision are high due to their high speeds. 💥 High-Speed Hazards: Satellites move at over 28,000 kilometers per hour. This speed increases the risk of collisions. The satellite was successfully deployed into Low-Earth Orbit at 10:36 am PT, on December 1, 2023. GNOMES-4 is equipped with the world’s best weather sensor, a PlanetiQ-proprietary technology sensor called Pyxis, which enables PlanetiQ to offer the highest quality GNSS-RO data for enhanced weather forecasting and atmospheric research to both government and commercial customers, such as airlines, insurance, energy, agriculture and financial services.
