Taiwan: Beyond 5G low-Earth orbit satellite program potentially facing setbacks with low payload performance and project timeline delays. "However, insiders argue that these hurdles are an inherent part of R&D, and demonstrate ITRI's willingness to tackle complex challenges, rather than cherry-picking tasks to hit performance targets. In contrast to international norms where space mission failures are common, Taiwan's traditionally high success rates are..." https://lnkd.in/gGeGmqhg #taiwan #spactech #satcom #asiatechnews #starlink #indopacific #technologynews

Ensuring the world’s 8.5 billion mobile phones never lose coverage isn’t a new idea, but it’s becoming increasingly viable, thanks to more powerful antennas and the arrival of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations. But before the satellite-to-device market can truly take off, experts say the industry must align around proprietary versus open standards, address the infrastructure hurdles of enabling cross-network roaming, and better define the use cases for the service. #network #apple #smartphone #future #iPhone #samsung #aerospace #connectivity #connectivitymatters #military #communications #newspace #newspaceeconomy #constellations #satellite #space #satelliteoperatos #satcoms #satellitesystems #satelliteoperations #telecommunications #spaceindustry #LowEarthOrbit #geo #megaconstellations #esa #nasa #eu #europe #resilience #oneweb #starlink #spacex #telesat #globalstar #iridium #qualcomm #huawei #ASTSpacemoblie #lynk #spacecraft #internetofthings #development #emergencyresponse #5g #6g #5gnetworks #spacedata #oneweb #starlink #iris2 #iridium #directtodevice #autonomousvehicles #d2d #dtd #MichaelHadjitheodosiou https://lnkd.in/eVXwd3vf

Up until recently, satellites such as spy satellites would take years of work and a handful built every year. this is clearly changing. The impact of this to our industry and companies such as LightPath Technologies is that what used to be small volume production of specialized infrared optics for use in space is now becoming a regular, recurring revenue. One more area where the Photonics and Optics industry is growing and evolving. https://lnkd.in/edkHyN_D

When looking forward to a New Year its always interesting to take stock in what has happened previously. This report, "Potential markets for advanced satellite communications" funded by NASA and written by Booz Allen was published in 1993. With all forward-looking reports there are always a few sentences that with the passing of time are now quite humorous, such as: "Electronic mail is likely to be the most dynamic component of data traffic. " P7-1 (Well I guess the report predated the Internet) "The change from C-band to other bands, however, will occur slowly. " P7-4 (Right up until the point it went very fast) And my personal favorite: "The main driver behind the interest in LEO satellite systems is interest in the cellular, telephone, fax, and voice messaging businesses. Recent estimates are that, ..... the number of subscribers to mobile services could reach 100 million worldwide by 2000." P7-4 We are still a long way from those kinds of numbers. However 3GPP standardization for Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) will enable a better chance of reaching those numbers in the future. What's your favorite nugget from this report? https://lnkd.in/eDA7JkEP #leo #ntn #satellitecommunications #vsat #dbs #innovation #satellite
