Students in my Intro to Mechanical Engineering course were challenged to build high-performance cranes. For some, their aesthetics were as creative as their technical approaches. This entry, "Super Pig", really stole my heart. The pipe cleaner tail! It's always a joy to see personality and artistry emerge in (even very technical) projects like these.

Random photo of a deformed study table’s leg. But a quick reflection from being halfway of my degree. Alhamdulillah had no regrets going through the hurdles and struggles since day one of being a mechanical engineering student. I learned how to define a problem. I learned how to separate the needs of a client from their wants. I learned how to break down a problem into small tangible pieces. I learned to connect the dots. I learned to appreciate the little things that have been built around me. psst psst I also learned to criticize the flawed products. I learned about how important it is to have a purpose (I mean, even the non-living objects had specific purposes, how can us human beings not have one). A famous saying by Buya Hamka translated in English, “If life is just about living, pigs in the forest also live. If work is just about work, monkeys also work.” Food for thought.

Milestone reflections: Celebrating 5 Years of my Mechanical Engineering Jorney In January 2019, I got my bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. As I reflect on the past 5 years since earning my degree, I acknowledge that the journey was vast and full of challenges. The transition from academia to the professional realm has been a compelling saga of applying theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. Every project undertaken has been a testament to adaptability and the ability to turn theory into tangible solutions. In the corporate arena, the learning curve has been steep but immensely rewarding. Each project presented a new puzzle to solve, a chance to innovate, and an opportunity to refine both technical and soft skills. The ability to collaborate with diverse teams and the agility to navigate through industry dynamics have become indispensable assets. Networking has proven to be a crucial element in this journey. What do I like to do in my free time? Designing. 👩🏻💻👩🎨 Nobody asks me to do it, it's purely my own initiative to have fun designing and simulating parts or, if it's more complex, a structure. As you may know, I am a mechanical engineer with some years of experience. I once explored the world of steelmaking during a two-week summer vacation, supervising the assembly of a steel mill. Now, about to complete two years in the heavy machinery industry within the vast and challenging mining market, my thesis, oddly enough, focused on the medical field. Its goal was to design a tool that could revolutionize the way complex surgeries could be performed remotely. 💡 With this, I invite you to share and reflect on the idea that regardless of whether you study or work in engineering, medicine, arts, law or perhaps none of these fields, life often takes us down unexpected paths. It makes us flexible and broadens our perspective. Make the most of your knowledge and don't be afraid to express your opinions or apply for that job for which you feel you are not fully qualified. Next up for our Co-op Spotlights is Landon Hamaker! Landon is a Mechanical Engineering major and has spent the last 3 semesters on a Product Engineer Co-op at Marvin! He says his main job is "At Marvin, my team and I do research and development on existing products. We make design changes to enhance the performance of the Ultimate, Signature, and Scenic doors. Part of our day-to-day functions include testing units on a huge polycarbonate wall capable of simulating rain, wind, and pressure of a category 5 hurricane. Sometimes units will fail and we have to deconstruct them to perform root cause analysis to determine what went wrong. After that, we can engineer solutions to try to stop any issues in the future." He says he has learned the importance of the engineering design process and the scientific method, and properly utilizing them in real-world applications. When asked what the most important aspect of getting experience outside the classroom is, he said "One of the most important experiences my Co-op has shown me is how to communicate with people outside of the engineering field. We are constantly working with other groups to make changes and communicating engineering problems to non-engineers has always been a struggle for me. I'm really grateful to have all the wonderful people around me to progress my skills." Landon's advice to someone considering a Co-op is "There are numerous beneficial experiences you can gain during co-op that you can't obtain in a classroom setting. Being surrounded by experienced like-minded individuals helped me progress skills that will be crucial in my career. Not only are you able to apply your knowledge from classes to your co-op, but once you return to school, the things you learned at work will also apply for the rest of your schooling." Week 2 of SWEP: Hands-on Experience with Wood and Metal related operations As I wrap up the second week of my Student Work Experience Program (SWEP), I'm excited to share the new skills and knowledge I've gained. This week, I had the opportunity to delve into both wood and metalwork operations, expanding my practical experience in mechanical engineering. 🔧 Lathe Machine Operation: I learned how to operate a lathe machine, mastering the techniques for shaping materials with precision. ⚙️ Angle Grinder Usage: I gained hands-on experience with the angle grinder, understanding its versatility in cutting, grinding, and polishing. 🔩 Bench Vices & Metal Devices: I worked with various bench vices and metal-related tools, improving my ability to handle and manipulate different materials safely and effectively. 🔥 Glass Blowing: I even ventured into the art of glass blowing, learning the delicate process of shaping glass through heat and skill. Each of these experiences has broadened my understanding and practical abilities in mechanical engineering, and I'm looking forward to what the coming weeks will bring. Stay tuned for more updates!
