“Jo is obsessed with death!”
My friends share this anecdote regularly. Half with uneasiness, half in jest, but either way still managing to make me sound a bit odd to anyone who doesn’t know me well.
It’s not that I’m obsessed with death.
I’m obsessed with the most fragile and delicate parts of the human experience. Specifically, how technology plays a role helping us navigate the most vulnerable moments we’ll ever have to endure over the course of a lifetime.
Loving someone, heartbreak, birth, grief. Bringing your newborn home from hospital and hoping you can keep them alive. The final few days of a parent’s life, putting fresh flowers in the vase as machines beep in the background.
As a designer and technologist, this is where I choose to operate. I serve these critical junctures; the life moments where everything changes, and the intersection of humanity and technology. Because in these moments, technology isn’t just a tool. It’s a bridge, a lifeline; a way to feel supported and understood.
This is why I do what I do. Not because I’m obsessed with death, but because I’m devoted to life — in all its depth and transience.
