I've been thinking about this a lot lately especially as someone in HR. Sometimes we hire people who for whatever reason aren't good fits and we unfortunately have to let them go. We usually know fairly quickly if this is the case. Other times, someone needs to be terminated due to an employee relations reason. Both scenarios aren't great but it makes sense why the action is taken at the end. . But when you have an employee for a few years now and notice they're making mistakes or performance has changed, is it not our job to address and help support our employees and colleagues as well? To find out what the cause is and have conversations that result in success? To help provide resources and create a performance plan or a timeline of goals to be met gradually? 🤔 . Rome wasn't built in a day, so why do we expect employees to bounce back immediately without understanding the full picture and acknowledging the progress being made? We just let them go because it's easier? Too many times I see organizations skip a lot of steps in the remediation process because it saves time and money. But you have an obligation to support your employees first. 🤨 . I don't think anyone should have their career derailed and be denied a second chance. If they're a great employee, and their only mistake was that life threw a curve ball that was a little too much to bear, then help them up.🤷🏻♀️ . That said, I know someone who is exceptional and unfortunately was let go because her job would not acknowledge some of the things I mentioned above. If anyone knows of general admin, executive assistant, dei coordinator, or mid level HR positions in the NYC/NJ area, please let me know and I will connect you. I unfortunately don't have anything available at the moment but I'm hoping someone in my network can help get this person back on their feet.
