Every child deserves to be educated in a safe setting that delivers the right level of education. However, this is often not the case for the most vulnerable young people, because establishing Alternative Provision for autistic pupils and those with special needs can be difficult and challenging. In this month’s Education Today magazine, Options Autism’s Managing Director, Emma Sanderson says the needs of pupils are outstripping specialist provision, and until there are enough schools available for the most vulnerable, the issue is here to stay. By raising awareness, we aim to reduce the stigma around learning difficulties like dyslexia. We are helping children understand that everyone learns differently. One of our favorite things to receive in our parent community is photos and videos from parents showing off their children are happy and feeling a sense of belonging at a new international school. The parents usually send these stories, photos, and videos, after feeling supported through terrible experiences at the international school their child(ren) were at before. We love to see the joy, #WellBeingAndBelonging. That makes us happy. However, we would love #InternationalSchools to do better at #Inclusion and #StudentSupport across the international school ecosystem so we receive less of these stories. The joyful stories are only coming after trauma and hurt at previous international schools, and that's sad and bad, and we feel that part too. The trauma, the hurt, and the discriminatory service to neurodivergent and disabled students is also against the #ChildSafeguarding standards set out by the International Task Force on Child Protection that many major international school accreditation agencies ascribe to. https://lnkd.in/djfNyXhq Image ID: A sad icon face in the lower left. In my years of contracting with schools, I've noticed a trend in Individual Education Plans for autistic students who transfer from public to specialized schools..... When given a supportive environment with communication freedom, access to sensory tools, and respected self-advocacy, they quickly achieve their behavior/social communication goals. 🤔 Have you seen that? *Teachers are amazing! This post, by no means, is saying it is the teachers. It is the system. #InclusiveEducation #supportingdiversity
