Years ago, I had an opportunity to pitch the team that manages Shaquille O'Neal's product empire and I have never been so boxed out in my entire life.
They were insulted that I would even dare
ask them for money for the service that our team provided (I think it's important to mention that I was NOT the owner of this company).
"Shaq doesn't pay."
"You get to say that you work with Shaq and use his brand equity so we get the service on a pure commission basis."
Nah that wouldn't work, so we didn't do the deal.
That was my first introduction into pitch celebrity companies. I realized that I had so much to learn. I didn't know that a company could literally draw a line in the sand and say "we do not pay" and just survive....
At the end of the day it would not have been a good deal anyways because of how the platforms worked, but it was a call I will never forget.
