A lot of game developers and VFX artists would fare so much better if they weren't being treated like they work in a sweatshop. I do understand that deadlines on projects exist but I see no reason to stir up stress and anxiety in people that are working hard to put out a product. Poor management and underlying greed is what causing so much turmoil in the game industry now. Instead of laying off artists and other important positions, game developers could spilt up groups of designers, engineers, and programmers into smaller projects. Not every game needs to be a graphical showpiece or a gigantic mountain of work. Think about games back in the day... they were ACTUALLY completely DONE and didn't require anything else. And they were simpler in scope. And the people making the games REALLY CARED about the work. A lot of us have passion for art and burning out artists and designers isn't helping. When we enjoy what we're working on and getting paid well, we produce at a higher quality.

Need a💥 VFX/Tech Artist? 💥Julian Vitt is looking for his next employer. Link to his Artstation: https://lnkd.in/e-k9BvH5 ⬇ More information about Julian: Julian has been working with us since last year and it was a blast (get it? Blast = explosions ... nevermind). Here are some of the responsibilities he had: 💠Real-time VFX: VFX Graph and Shuriken System 💠Shader with Unity Shader Graph and HLSL (UI - & 3D Shader) 🛠 He can easily take ideas (or make them himself), draft possible solutions, craft visual effects for the whole team to choose from, and give his own knowledgeable opinion on the matter. 😸 As a person, we have always loved talking to Julian, because he is curious, funny, and generally a great person to work with. If you want to learn more about Julian, without my biased opinion, I can refer you to the following awesome folks: - Markus Esch (an experienced Tech Artist from Pixel Maniacs who mentored Julian) - Ralf C. Adam (a producer we worked with and a games industry veteran) Feel free to ask these two or me any questions you have. Of course, you can contact Julian directly! 👀 As a little example, you can see how Julian prototyped the effects for a 3D top-down deckbuilding game (GIF below). -- 📣 As announced in our studio closure post this is the first part (of 6) where I introduce you to our team. https://lnkd.in/ewFbGxTr 💼 Everyone is looking for a new job and it would be awesome if you could engage with this post, to support us. We're thankful for every opportunity 🤖 Next up: Game Designer, Yoshua Woo -- #games #gamesindustry #lookingforjob #gamedev #remotejobs #gamesdevelopment #vfx #vfxart #indiegame #indiedev #videogames #visualeffects

Welcome to the VFX industry of 2024, where stunning visuals are crafted by exhausted artists running on caffeine and endless client revisions. It’s a world of screen magic and behind-the-scenes chaos, where "just a few more changes" is the soundtrack of every project—and the enemy of every artist’s sleep. The New Reality: Once, VFX studios were vibrant hubs of collaboration, with specialists working together. Today, relentless studio closures and layoffs have reduced those teams to skeleton crews. The solution? Hand the work of 10 people to 1 artist. One person is now expected to do it all: wrangle particles in Houdini, animate lifelike characters, composite scenes, and—oh, make that explosion "pop" a little more. A Day in the Life: One Artist’s Nightmare Meet Dave, your average VFX artist: talented, driven, and teetering on the edge of burnout. Each morning, he’s greeted by feedback asking for more "pop." It’s like telling a chef their perfectly cooked dish needs a bit more “wow.” And of course, it’s all due by yesterday. Task list is endless. Fix the lighting on a blinding battle scene. Animate a dragon—photorealistic, of course. Render a collapsing skyscraper—don’t forget the "oomph." Composite several shots, adjust the colors, and pull it all together. And there’s a client meeting at 10 AM, where "minor tweaks" will turn his day upside down. Weekends: The New Workdays Weekends used to be for rest. Not anymore. Saturdays and Sundays now mirror weekdays. Deadlines never stop, revisions keep coming, and layoffs mean the remaining artists like Dave are carrying entire productions on their backs. The Client: Enthusiastic and Oblivious The client, full of clueless enthusiasm, leans in with a smile, saying, "Just a few more changes!"—as though those requests won’t take another 20 hours of work. Meanwhile, Dave sits frozen, eyes wide from exhaustion. He’s done the impossible, and yet… the client wants it to pop more. What’s Next for VFX? The situation is unsustainable. Layoffs have left the few remaining artists burned out. The demand for perfection rises, but the workforce keeps shrinking. While VFX keeps pushing the envelope with incredible visuals, it’s leaving behind a trail of frustrated, overworked artists. What can be done? Studios need to recognize the immense pressure artists are under, rethink how they assign workloads, set realistic deadlines, and stop treating "just a few more changes" like it’s nothing. Until then, artists like Dave will keep working through sleepless nights, watching their task lists grow as fast as the coffee cups pile up. Maybe one day, the client will finally be satisfied. But until then... just a few more changes, Dave. Just a few more. The Takeaway The VFX industry must stop putting entire productions on a single artist’s shoulders. It’s unsustainable, unfair, and driving talent out of the industry. For now, let’s salute the Daves of the VFX world—those unsung heroes turning pixels into blockbusters.

#QuickTips for this week are from our ✨game artists✨ **First steps in VFX** - Part I 1. Visual effects are so much fun for players to experience and for artists to create. However, it is not an easy aspect of game development, even for more senior VFX artists. If you have not delved into visual effects yet (regardless of the game engine you are using), we recommend starting by getting familiar with the interface and workflow. Seek assistance from your tech lead to identify the most efficient tools for creating visual effects in that specific development environment. 2. Once you have mastered the tools, we recommend exploring two key features: particle systems and lighting. These elements are fundamental for bringing objects to life and can yield easily achievable yet effective results. Particle systems are widely used, so become acquainted with the various manipulations and parameters (such as emission rate, lifetime, velocity, etc.) based on the effect you aim to achieve. 3. Apply a similar approach to lighting, familiarize yourself with different types of lights and their properties, including sources, surface reactions, and shadows. In addition to angles and intensity, pay attention to the colour temperatures of your lighting. A simple change between a cold and warm setting can completely alter the atmosphere and narrative of the player's experience. This is particularly important within high dynamic range environments, which we will cover separately. Have a creative week everyone! #mondaymotivation ☕

📢We've just opened two new roles for a Senior Game Designer and a Senior Narrative Designer! But what does a narrative designer do at Next Games? How is their work different from that of a typical Game Designer? We asked our Design Director, Tim, to explain: "A Game Designer creates content that keeps players engaged, challenged, and curious. On the other hand, a Narrative Designer ensures we are creating a fantasy that players want to engage with. This could include a world, characters, and sometimes a story. Every game has a narrative, but some games have a story, too." Read more about the roles and apply below! ⬇️ #Helsinki #NowHiring
