Not just that, it contributes to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, largely due to toxic chemical dyes and extensive machinery usage. Enter Colorfix – they try to transform this landscape. Their groundbreaking approach uses bacteria-based dyes developed through natural fermentation, aligning with nature and benefitting both people and the planet. 🍃 Colorfix's journey began with a quest to mitigate the environmental damage of chemical dyes, drawing inspiration from nature's own coloring methods. By replicating the DNA pathways of colors found in flora and fauna, they've created a sustainable alternative that doesn't extract from nature but emulates it. Their process starts with microbial engineering, followed by careful pigment extraction and fermentation – similar to brewing beer but yielding vibrant colors instead of alcohol. Finally, these dyes are naturally fixed onto fabrics, ensuring quality without environmental compromise. However, it's not just about the dyes. True sustainability in fashion involves a cultural shift – buying less, reusing more, and extending the life of our clothes. What an interesting morning we had in our "Scaling second-hand clothing and fashion" webinar! ☀ We heard enlightening and inspiring presentations about how to shift our current textile system to a more sustainable and circular textile system. The conversation in the chat was thriving and there were a lot of discussions of different aspects about second hand and social aspects of textile reuse. A few messages from the webinar: ✔ We need to keep garments in use longer, by sharing, repairing, reusing, but we also need to reduce consumption. ✔ The corner stone of sustainable textile systems are longer lifetime of products. ✔ The second-hand will reduce waste, energy and resources but it will not automatically reduce or replace the purchase and production of new clothing.  ✔ Second-hand is not automatically slow fashion. Emphasis on quantity, real “need” and purpose is vital. ❓ Do you have a pair of jeans in your wardrobe? 👖 That's very likely because jeans have been at the heart of fashion collections for decades. According to Statista, the global market for jeans was estimated to be around 2.9 billion pieces in 2021. The way jeans are made typically requires large amounts of resources, and the way they are designed makes them difficult to recycle after use. Jeans are one example of the fashion industry’s take-make-waste linear approach, and therefore, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation asked this important questions: Can we design and make jeans to be fit for a circular economy today? 🤔 And what can we do together to make circular economy for fashion the norm? ♻ They started a jeans redesign project and put the circular design of jeans centre stage. Our textile expert Carl Warkentin comments: "Jeans are a staple in most wardrobes, but our current approach to making and disposing of them is unsustainable. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation's jeans redesign project is an important step towards a circular economy for fashion, where jeans are designed and made to be reused and recycled.
