When 24 of the 50 states now permit two-year colleges like Lakeshore Technical College to confer bachelor’s degrees to address acute workforce shortages (like nursing), it is pretty clear this is where we are going as a country. Wisconsin policymakers need to ask whether we will be state number 25, 26, 27…etc…or state number 50 (like Wisconsin was with authorizing technical colleges to offer the AA and AS degrees - and we weren’t just last by a little…we were last by a decade). I don’t like being last place in anything, and I think most Wisconsinites feel the same. Here is the reality in our community - we have a significant demand for bachelor-educated nurses and not enough capacity to meet the demand. The solution to this workforce problem is to allow institutions like LTC to confer the degree. We appreciate the work the American Association of Community Colleges is doing on this front.

Today we have released the UCAS January Equal Consideration deadline data for 2024, which shows that the number of UK 18-year-olds and international students applying for a place in higher education has slightly increased compared to last year. Other key headlines include: -⚙️There has been continued demand for STEM courses. Since 2023, applications from all ages and all domiciles to Engineering and technology courses have seen 10% growth. -👩🏼⚕️Applications to nursing have decreased across all specialisms, but particularly Adult nursing and Mental health nursing. -🌎UK higher education remains attractive globally, with a 0.7% increase in international applicants. LACK OF WORKING CLASS YOUNG MEN IN THE PROFESSIONS -"THIS BOY CAN" I crunched through new UCAS figures this week on 2024 applications. 37,620 fewer 18 year old UK young men applied than girls (56% v 44%). For Polar 4 Quintile 1 (bottom 20% of postcodes), it is 6,890 but the percentage gap is 60% v 40% that is 50% more young women and men from that cohort applying. We are already seen over the last 15 years a switch in professional entry. Where, bar STEM and accountancy, all other professions have more women than men joining. We have also seen, as set out by the Social Mobility Commission, social mobility stagnating - including for young men. These figures show this is not going to change soon. So year and year working class young men are not entering the professions, leading to class groupthink and a lack of diversity equality and inclusion. One answer is for professional bodies and large firms to be far more proactive in reaching out disadvantaged communities and their schools - to show that careers in the professions is for them as is university (not the be all). A "This Boy Can" campaign. That would be proof of a 360 degree DEI outlook and the true meaning of male allies (men being allies to others and others being allies of men). #allyship #dei
