Has the CFO Role Eclipsed the CEO in Value?
We have hosted a number of discussions over the last couple of years on the evolving role of the CFO, we’ve explored how finance leaders have transitioned from traditional responsibilities to becoming essential sparring partners to the CEO. But a new study by OneStream suggests the role has gone even further—positioning the CFO as possibly even more critical to an organisation’s success than the CEO.
Key findings include: 🔹 67% of CEOs believe their CFO’s role is paramount to organisational success. 🔹 4 in 5 investors require an ambitious, growth-focused CFO before they’ll invest, with top asset managers increasing their initial commitments by up to 3.6% when this quality is present. 🔹 CFO competence ranks as the second most important attribute for investors, ahead of CEO performance.
Despite this, many CFOs feel stretched thin, balancing deep operational responsibilities with strategic initiatives critical to growth. As the CFO role continues to expand, it’s clear they’re becoming pivotal for resilience and long-term success.
What do you think? Are we seeing a fundamental shift in the balance of power in leadership?
