Very helpful article from BoardSource!
My key takeaway: not every board member will be able to give the same size gift.
Organizations need to remember that not every board director has the financial capacity to give the same size gift, and if they do, maybe the board isn't diverse enough. Diversity isn't only important when it comes to race, gender, and age -- but class too!
If everyone on your board can afford to give $X amount or more (and then some for special events and campaigns) then your board may be missing representation of a different kind.
As someone who grew up in a low-income household and is currently tackling the aftermath (debt, scarcity mindset, etc.), I believe that in order to have true diversity, equity, and inclusion on a nonprofit board, the governance committee along with leadership should consider recruiting more young people like me -- who maybe don't have the means -- but they have the heart.
What do you think?
