🚗💡 Did you know that for decades, crash-test dummies were based on the average male? This oversight has significant consequences for women's safety on the roads! Statistics reveal that women are 70% more vulnerable to injury or death in frontal collisions, yet the standard crash-test models didn't reflect this reality. 🌟 Kudos to Astrid Linder, a trailblazer in traffic safety and the mind behind a ground-breaking project, as she has spearheaded the creation of the world's first average-sized female crash test dummy 🙌 This revolutionary step acknowledges the uniqueness of women's bodies, closing the gender data gap in road safety. Her expertise in biomechanics and road injury prevention has been instrumental in challenging the status quo. 🔗 Let's celebrate these strides towards inclusivity in safety measures and recognise the importance of diverse representation in the design and testing of vehicles. It's not just about equality; it's about saving lives. 🌐🚺🚦 #RoadSafety #GenderDataGap #Innovation #DiversityInTech #WomenInSTEM #TrafficSafety #AstridLinder

Writing is important. ✨ 🚗 It can literally save lives. 👍 🙍♀️ If you’ve read Invisible Women, you might remember that back in 2019, when the book was published, the author, Carolina Criado-Perez’ discovered that women involved in car accidents were 47% more likely to be seriously injured than men, and 17% more likely to die...because crash test dummies used by car manufacturers are based ONLY on the male body! 🚀 It will soon be mandatory for car manufacturers in the US to use female crash test dummies AND those crash test dummies need to be based on the female body... As Criado-Perez wrote: “New legislation has been introduced in the US that not only mandates for the first time that female crash test dummies should be included in the same number of tests as the default male dummy. And on the subject of that so-called female car crash test dummy, (readers of Invisible Women will remember that this is actually just a scaled-down male dummy and for about the millionth time, women are not scaled-down men) this new legislation ALSO requires, again for the first time, that the female dummy be based on, you know, an actual female body.” #Safety #Equality #GenderInclusion #InvisibleWomen #Legislation #AutomotiveIndustry

Following on from yesterday's post, it is day 2 of sharing some examples of the Gender Data Gap in light of International Women's Day this week... According to veritynow.org: 😲 In the U.S., data shows women are 73% more likely than men to be injured in a vehicle crash, because of gender bias in crash testing practices. 😲 Women buy 50% of all vehicles and influence 80% of buying decisions, but in the U.S., female dummies are not required to be crash tested in the driver’s position. 😲 U.S. data shows women are 17%-18.5% more likely to die in a vehicle crash than men. That means over 1,300 preventable deaths per year. [1] 😲 U.S. data suggests more than 1,600 young adults (16-24) and elderly (65+) lives could be saved if vehicle crash test standards were updated. 🚗💥 Enhancing Road Safety: Addressing the Debate on Female Crash Test Dummies! 💥🚗 Did you know? Women are at a heightened risk of injury in car accidents compared to men. However, the pivotal question remains: Will the incorporation of female crash test dummies in safety assessments yield tangible improvements? Here's the insight from experts: 🌟 Bridging the Gender Gap in Safety Tests: Presently, safety evaluations predominantly rely on crash test dummies designed to simulate average male bodies from the 1970s, neglecting the safety concerns of women. Advocates advocate for the inclusion of female representations in crash tests, stressing the imperative of gender equality in safety assessments. 🔍 Navigating the Complexity: While the demand for female crash test dummies is evident, experts urge caution against oversimplification. It's vital to comprehend the underlying factors contributing to women's susceptibility to specific injuries before implementing remedies. 💡 Exploring Innovative Approaches: Some specialists propose exploring alternative methodologies beyond traditional crash test dummies. By delving into the intricacies of injury patterns, researchers aim to devise targeted interventions to mitigate risks specifically for women. 🔬 Harnessing Technological Advancements in Safety: In addition to physical crash tests, computer simulations offer a promising avenue for assessing safety across various body types and scenarios. Collaborative endeavors between manufacturers and safety organizations propel advancements in safety assessments. 📈 Charting the Course Ahead: As discussions persist, ongoing testing of female crash test dummies such as the Thor-5F symbolizes progress. With a final decision slated for September 2024, the trajectory of safety evaluations holds the promise of being more inclusive and efficacious. Let's continue to push boundaries to ensure road safety for all, irrespective of gender or physique! 🛣️ #RoadSafety #CrashTestDummies #GenderEquality 🌐 https://lnkd.in/encVGfY5

France's "Drive Like a Woman" Campaign: A Clever Challenge to Stereotypes France's road safety campaign urging people to "drive like a woman" is a creative way to tackle a serious issue. It flips the stereotype of women being bad drivers on its head, using statistics to show that men are actually responsible for a higher percentage of traffic accidents. This campaign highlights the importance of safe driving practices for everyone, regardless of gender. By encouraging men to adopt behaviors typically associated with women drivers, like caution and attentiveness, the campaign aims to make roads safer for all. This approach has sparked conversation and challenged assumptions about gender roles behind the wheel. It's a reminder that safe driving is about skill and responsibility, not masculinity. #roadsafety #safedriving
