To be able to biochemically convert the organic matter in the wastewater into biomass and carbon dioxide, the aeration basin must be supplied with oxygen. The aeration process accounts for around 70% of the wastewater treatment plant's total electricity consumption. SOx EMISSION TREATMENT IN BOILER OPERATIONS SOx gases are generated during fuel combustion due to the reaction between sulfur (mainly found in the fuel) and oxygen. These harmful gases need to be effectively treated to avoid negative environmental impacts. To reduce SOx emissions, in addition to prioritizing low-sulfur fuels (such as biomass or Indonesian coal), companies can invest in absorption towers to remove SOx from flue gases. There are two types of absorption towers: 👉Using spray dryers: A Ca(OH)2 slurry is sprayed as a fine mist at 200°C in appropriate quantities to absorb SO2 in the flue gas. The advantage of this system is that it doesn’t generate wastewater, resulting in lower operating costs. 👉Using wet desulfurization (DeSOx): A circulating NaOH or Ca(OH)2 solution is used in the tower to absorb SO2. This system has a higher treatment efficiency, but all equipment must be made from stainless steel due to the corrosive nature of the process. Iceland takes waste carbon dioxide (CO2) from geothermal steam and combines it with hydrogen from water to make methanol. - The Oakridge National Laboratory in Knoxville, TN can make a BILLION tons of fuel from biomass (ordinary wood, municipal solid waste, yard clippings, agricultural waste, animal waste, greases and oils) annually. - There's 240M tons of waste per year in the US; 160M of those tons go to landfills. We could create 15-16B gallons of methanol out of this waste--replacing the entire US fuel supply. - It would cost us $420B to build nationwide methanol facilities. Even though it's a huge amount, it represents less than one year's worth of expenses on refinery operations in the Persian Gulf.
