In the pursuit of undeclared radioactive material that might be used for terrorism or nuclear weapons, port and border security agents have handheld RIIDs (radioisotope identification devices) which are similar to the old Geiger counters except with much more advanced sensors that can also identify the type of radioactive material from the gamma radiation energy signature (using proprietary software).
