The wind is blowing We just listened into the yearly report from WindEurope here at the Bilbao conference. Main picture: 18.3 GW of new wind power installed in Europe in 2023. With 272 GW installed, wind provides 19% of Europe’s electricity now. Looking to grow to 500 GW by 2030. No other energy source has gone even near these growth figures in 2023, possibly only solar, in fact. This is all happening despite the lingering supply chain issues, the disrupted geopolitical situation, the growing costs, the politicians selling skeptical and delusional stories against renewable energies to the most gullible of their electors, and a permitting process which has only recently began to wake up from its paralytic past. We’re doing all right, after all.

Two-thirds of the population favour solar power 💚☀️ A new survey conducted by Glocalities, Global Citizen, and The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative shows that there is massive global support for switching to renewable energy sources. The results show that 68% support solar power ☀️ and only 14% support the continued use of fossil fuels (even though fossil fuels account for 77% of global energy consumption in 2022). It's not just a fun, roll-off-the-tongue German term – it's a fascinating concept that's shaping the future of renewable energy. 🖼️ Picture this: A stretch of time when the wind barely whispers through the turbines and the sun takes a temporary hiatus behind the clouds. That's dunkelflaute – a period of low or even no wind and sunlight, posing a challenge for traditional renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. 🛠️💡Luckily, this challenge is sparking some serious innovation. Engineers and scientists worldwide are rolling up their sleeves to tackle dunkelflaute head-on. 📆 It's #GasPackage trilogue negotiations tomorrow! The renewable energy industry and civil society are calling for: 💧 The establishment of an independent European Network of Network Operations for #Hydrogen, known as ENNOH 🔍 with independent oversight and 🤝 coordination with ENTSO-E and ENTSOG, in consultation with renewable energy producers and end users. This will lower the cost of renewable hydrogen, prioritise renewable hydrogen for hard-to-electrify sectors, avoid stranded assets, and ensure proportionate hydrogen grid development by coordinating with ENTSO-E to better reflect areas where electricity is or is not a viable solution. Did you know that burning coal and gas for generating electricity fell to record lows throughout the European Union? The EU’s fossil fuel generation declined by 17% this year due to a surge in renewable energy use. Renewable energy use increased throughout Europe, with solar power increasing by 13% and wind by 5%. At EcoCiv, we recognize that reducing carbon emissions is an essential step towards an ecological civilization. We hope to see this trend continue and reach other continents.

Inzwischen, in Deutschland. In Germany district heating is estimated to reach 25% of overall heat consumption by 2045, from 15% in 2023. The government has decided that by 2030 half of Germany’s existing district heating must run on renewable energy, and that it must be entirely climate neutral in 2045. As part of Germany’s efforts to become climate neutral, it is expected that dominating gas and coal-fired plants will be phased out and replaced by a mix of renewable energy technologies, including large-scale heat pumps, geothermal energy, solar thermal energy, and hydrogen plants. These are ambitions worth cheering, and the Swedish climate-tech industry has a broad range of solutions to support and accelerate the German transition. These solutions are already available on the market. Now we need to see the incentives to get them implemented. Let’s be ambitious!
