What is in a name? For many years, Ohio providers have referred to our nursing assistants as "State-tested nursing assistants" or "STNAs". Meanwhile, most of the country refer to them as "certified nursing assistants" or "CNAs". Our nursing assistants are more than just state-tested. They complete a rigorous course of study and earn a certification by demonstrating competencies in their profession. It is past time that we honor our nursing assistants with a title more befitting their accomplishments. Senate Bill 144 accomplished effectively changing this designation for our nursing assistants to CNAs. As long term care providers, we will need to update our job descriptions and policies as well as educate our staff on this change in professional designation. Tip for Hospice Nurses: How to Document to the Decline, or Negative Documentation. The principle is easy to understand, but not so easy to put into practice. Throughout nursing school we were taught to document positive outcomes, and that is what we did our whole nursing career … until we came to hospice. Now suddenly we have to switch to negative documentation. It’s hard! I struggled with this for years! One thing that helps me is changing the first word from positive to negative. Instead of saying the patient is oriented x 1, I say the patient is disoriented x 3. Say this to yourself and think about the difference in the image the two descriptions produce. Do this with each system - change the first word to the negative description. If you are struggling with this, you are not alone. It does take practice … a lot of practice.
