POLLUTION SOLUTIONS? The sharp decline in air quality in Jakarta has left everyone struggling for solutions. Jakartans responded in outrage over social media after an official at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry said the fastest way to resolve the problem is by praying for rain. The city has asked civil servants to work from home, sprayed the streets with water and will start fining vehicles that exceed emission standards. In that context, how can residents and workplaces make a difference? By minimizing the use of personal transport, for one. A study by PWC last year showed that 69% of Indonesian workers believe they can work from home. However, only 29% of workers said their company helped them minimize the environmental impact of their job. What kind of incentives does your firm have in place that can make a difference to air quality? #airquality #airpollution #jakarta #corporateresponsibility M&C Saatchi Indonesia

TARGETING MULTIGENERATIONAL FAMILIES 70 per cent of elderly Malaysians currently stay with their children or extended family members, like nephews, nieces and cousins. 8 in 10 of elderly parents receive financial assistance from their children, showing how much filial piety is part and parcel of Malaysian culture. One-third of Chinese couples live with their parents. In India, the multigenerational, patriarchal, patrilocal household is the prevalent form of family, and about 312 million people live in such an arrangement. In their urge to personalise messaging, are brands missing the collective decision making and influence that generations have on each other? Perhaps not entirely. In this article for Marketing Magazine Asia I explore how multigenerational marketing is an essential strategy across Asia. #generations #marketing #brands #asia #content #culture Ampersand Advisory https://lnkd.in/gwD6yTzh

TIME CAPSULE Junk Bookstore is Malaysia's largest second-hand bookstore, housing hundreds of thousands of books, from rare out of print works to comics and magazines with collector value. Entering the small, unassuming entrance, one is greeted by books piled from the floor to the ceiling, one has to navigate through tight spaces to get around, all the while being surrounded by books of every possible genre and title including educational, history, nursery rhymes, novels and more. The three-storey bookstore on Jalan Tun H S Lee has been in operation for some 30 years, and it's a major draw for locals and tourists alike, who come hunting for titles no longer available elsewhere. The staff constantly dusts and maintains the horde and are able to expertly pick out any title a customer might want, as long as it is in stock of course. The store's founder Adelyn Koh explained that the bookstore started as a collection of books left behind by foreign expatriates leaving for their home countries. Apart from books, the store has stacks of old LPs, cassettes, and even vintage typewriters. I picked up a 1974 edition of Theodore Levitt’s ‘Marketing for Business Growth’, and the August 1997 issue of George Magazine with Harrison Ford on the cover. Unfortunately, there wasn’t even a single PH Wodehouse in the collection, or anything by Malaysian cartoonist Lat. THE EYES HAVE IT Globally, 1.1 billion people experience vision loss because they do not have access to eye health services. 450 million children globally need a pair of glasses to see clearly. Digital eye strain (DES), also known as computer vision syndrome (CVS) affects over 50% of people, including both children and adults. According to one study, almost 90% of Malaysian University students experienced digital eye strain after 2 hours of computer use with the most disturbing symptom being headache. But access to eyecare is far from ideal. The World Council of Optometry recommends an ideal ratio of 1:10000 – Malaysia’s ratio is 1:15147. The ophthalmologist to population ratio in urban India is 1:25,000; in the rural areas of India, the ratio is close to 1:219,000. So it was heartening to find an information-cum-checkup event organized by opthalmic retailer Focus Point in Midvalley Mall, on the occasion of World Sight Day. Judging by the queue of people of all ages, interrupting their shopping for a timely, much-needed checkup, it’s a concern that has probably been niggling them for a while. Supported by brands such as Acuvue and Bausch & Lomb, the outreach is raising awareness about the importance of eye health. #vision #eyecare #opthalmology #eyescreening Ampersand Advisory
